30 years into this journey, it feels like the Atelier JRPG series is on the brink of a genuine reawakening. Back in August 2024, a tantalizing trailer for “Atelier Yumia: The Alchemist of Memories & the Envisioned Land” dropped, hinting at some major shifts for the franchise’s next installment. This darker narrative and innovative synthesis and combat mechanics are intriguing peeks into what lies ahead. As the 26th title in this beloved series, it revolves around the profound concept of “memory.” Yumia Liessfeldt, our alchemist protagonist, is on a mission to unravel the mystery of how the colossal Aladissian Empire fell apart.
Due to the overwhelming success of the Atelier Ryza games, fans eagerly anticipate the upcoming installment in the JRPG series from developer Gust. Over time, Gust has sought fan input through surveys and social media, leaving many curious about which player-generated ideas will be included in the next game. In an interview with Game Rant, Junzo Hosoi, Head of Gust and producer on Atelier Yumia: The Alchemist of Memories & the Envisioned Land, shared specific insights into what players can look forward to when the game launches on March 21, 2025. (This interview has been condensed for conciseness and clarity.)
New Additions to the Atelier Franchise
A: In Atelier Yumia, what fundamental game mechanics should players find are exploration, synthesis, and battle. These components have long been a part of the Atelier series, and one may wonder if there will be any fresh enhancements to these systems in Atelier Yumia.
In addition to exploration, combat, and creation, we’ve incorporated a unique building system that allows players to design their own workshops, craft custom furnishings, and decorate them as desired. During your adventures, you can gather diverse construction materials from the environment, which are distinct from those used for synthesis. Once you construct your workshop and add items like a synthesis table, you’ll be able to elevate its comfort level, resulting in benefits during gameplay such as expediting synthesis while traveling. The effects of your design choices will vary, and you can even create a dressing room to switch costumes.
A: Was there a worry that die-hard fans of the series might find the change in tone and character of this latest installment to be disconcerting, given that the previous protagonists like Ryza and Lulua had a distinctly different feel and the overall atmosphere is now darker rather than the usual lightheartedness?
In a new turn of events, the atmosphere and aesthetics have been redefined, but as soon as you dive into gameplay, the enchanting allure of the Atelier series becomes apparent through its characters and narrative. Initially, when we launched the initial installment of the Atelier Ryza franchise, there were hesitations due to the character’s altered presentation. However, as players became acquainted with the characters, particularly Ryza, opinions began to transform. Upon closer examination of Yumia and her design, the contrasting white and black motifs might have led some to assume a grim narrative, but it is not as somber as it appears. As you delve deeper into Yumia’s character, you will come to appreciate that she shares more similarities with characters from previous Atelier games than initially perceived.
Question: Why was the decision made for Atelier Yumia to include a villain, considering that it’s unusual for the series?
In crafting this new Atelier tale, I wanted to bring a more authentic, character-driven narrative to life. To achieve this depth, I felt it necessary to flesh out our characters with intricate backstories and complex motivations, and one way to do that was by introducing an antagonist. As you may recall, previous Atelier games didn’t feature a villain, but I believed that including one would enrich the storyline, allowing players not only to see things from Yumia’s perspective but also to comprehend the underlying reasons for the animosity between certain characters.
In our recent surveys and social media discussions about past Atelier games, many of you expressed a desire for a more engaging villain. To address this feedback, I decided to incorporate a villain into the game to strengthen the storyline and encourage a deeper emotional investment in our characters.
In terms of your professional background, could you share how your experiences, both successes and setbacks, from your past in the industry have influenced your contributions to Atelier Yumia and the overall series?
A key factor shaping both the narrative and the theme of recollection in my work stems from a deeply personal experience: my father was diagnosed with a brain tumor, which gradually took away his memories. However, his actions conveyed his affection for me, making it clear that our bond transcended memory alone. As we grow, our inner selves and memories intertwine, so even when one is lost, the love shared remains. This insight served as a catalyst for crafting Yumia’s story.

Question: The game boasts numerous distinctive and new characters. Out of all, which one would you say is your top pick as your favorite?
A: Despite numerous engaging characters in the game, Yumia stands out as my personal favorite. The initial idea for Yumia’s design was a collaboration between myself and artist Benitama, but it underwent significant transformations during development. Initially conceived, Yumia was the last character to receive her final design. I’ve spent an extensive amount of time with her throughout development, which has made me feel particularly connected to her as a character. Upon observation, you can perceive that she is not just fashionable but incredibly stylish and cool. She wields a staff capable of firing shots, rides a motorcycle, and sports boots that allow her double jumps to access hidden areas. In the game, Yumia exudes an undeniable air of coolness that’s hard to ignore.
Q: Can players expect world quests and episodes for each character in addition to the main story?
A: As you gather more team members, you’ll encounter character-focused missions. We’ve worked hard to incorporate their histories and backstories, providing insight into their past events. Apart from the primary narrative, there are numerous alternative means to enjoy the game.
Developing Atelier Yumia: The Alchemist of Memories & the Envisioned Land

Question: Can you share your vision for the entire “Envisioned” series, since Atelier Yumia is the initial installment in this sub-series?
Based on the positive response to Atelier Yumia, there’s a possibility for its continuation with Yumia and her series. We eagerly anticipate many people buying and playing Atelier Yumia to allow us to create a new series from it.
Question: Could you tell me which aspect of the development process posed the greatest challenge, be it technically or creatively?
As this game is a fresh addition to the Atelier series, it represents our largest development project ever in terms of an Atelier title. The complexity was spread across every facet of the development process due to the game’s size and our ambition for the Atelier series. Notably, open fields and real-time battles underwent significant transformations, and these aspects required the most time for us to perfect.

Q: When developing Atelier Yumia, was there any particular fan feedback that influenced the team?
In the initial stages of designing the game, we compiled a document containing comments and suggestions from fans who played earlier versions of the Atelier series. This is why the villain was incorporated into the storyline. Previous games primarily focused on the protagonist and her companions, narrating a straightforward tale. However, by introducing antagonists, we could create a more intricate and expansive narrative.
As a fellow enthusiast, I’m thrilled to see your excitement for Atelier Yumia: The Alchemist of Memories & the Envisioned Land! If I may add, the game’s captivating storyline and richly detailed world are just a few aspects that make it stand out. I can hardly wait to dive in and explore alongside you all!
Instead of merely introducing a fresh installment in the Atelier series, this game is our ambitious endeavor to elevate the entire franchise to greater heights. We’ve meticulously crafted numerous novel experiences, making it an ideal starting point for newcomers. This game offers a completely unique narrative, ensuring both long-time Atelier enthusiasts and those new to the series will be captivated by Yumia’s allure.
