Henry Cavill Emerges as Top Contender for Next James Bond

Summary

  • Amazon MGM takes creative control of James Bond franchise from previous producers, opening up the possibility for a new actor.
  • Possible new James Bond contenders include Tom Hardy, Cillian Murphy, and Aaron Taylor Johnson – all Christopher Nolan alumni.
  • Henry Cavill emerges as a strong candidate for the next 007, with past spy roles and an existing relationship with Amazon MGM.

In surprising developments, the creative control disagreement between Amazon MGM and James Bond producers Michael G. Wilson and Barbara Broccoli has finally been resolved. Now, these long-standing Bond producers are transferring intellectual property control to Amazon MGM, giving them the authority to decide on various aspects, including selecting the next actor to embody Agent 007.

As per Deadline reports, I’m thrilled to share that Amazon MGM is now set to take creative control over the iconic James Bond franchise. Barbara Broccoli and Michael Wilson, our cherished co-owners of the James Bond Intellectual Property, remain a significant part of this legacy. This latest move marks a substantial shift in the world of 007, following recent buzz about Broccoli’s remarks towards Amazon MGM.

Despite any past misunderstandings, I am optimistic about what Amazon MGM can bring to the table. Among the talented pool of potential actors, one man stands tall and unwavering – as strong as steel.

Waiting For Superman

Since the release of 2021’s “No Time To Die,” a variety of actors have emerged as strong candidates for the stylish role. One notable name that has been mentioned is Idris Elba, but it seems unlikely he would accept the role due to his change of heart on the subject after race was brought into question during discussions about casting. Other A-list actors such as Tom Hardy, Cillian Murphy, and Aaron Taylor Johnson, who have all worked with Christopher Nolan, find themselves in the running as well. These actors have been considered frontrunners at different times.

Tom Hardy brings a rugged toughness and physicality that could make him an intimidating James Bond. Cillian Murphy, with his ability to convincingly embody characters, would be superb for the role. Aaron Taylor-Johnson’s handsome appearance and muscular physique showcased in “Kraven The Hunter” make him a strong candidate. Regrettably, the flop of that movie might have disqualified him from further consideration.

In a more simplified form: Both Hardy and Murphy are excellent choices for the character, but they are both over 50, which suggests that Amazon MGM may be aiming to refresh the Bond image with a younger actor. The most likely candidate for the next James Bond is a young, talented British actor who has already proven himself on the big screen. Additionally, Christopher Nolan has shown interest in directing a James Bond film, making Henry Cavill an ideal choice for Nolan’s roster of leading men.

Never Say Never Again

Henry Cavill is currently 41 years old, but his physique gives him an edge over other actors aspiring for the role of Bond. Remarkably, he could easily pass as someone in their thirties, which is reportedly the age range that Amazon MGM is targeting. In 2005, Cavill attempted to secure the James Bond role, which eventually went to Daniel Craig. Despite his striking resemblance to his current self in his audition video, Cavill appeared somewhat rigid at the time, potentially over-reliant on his looks.

Today, his audition tape would shift from being labeled as just a “good-looking bar patron” to a more refined description like “dedicated gentleman embarking on a quest.” Given his extensive background in portraying suave spies in movies such as The Man From U.N.C.L.E. (2015), Mission Impossible: Fallout (2018), and Guy Ritchie’s The Ministry of Ungentlemanly Warfare (2024), it’s clear that he’s more than just a handsome face on the screen. In fact, in the latter film, Cavill portrayed Gus March-Phillips, a historical figure who founded the British Army’s no. 62 Commando and served as a significant influence for the James Bond character.

Henry Cavill has shown nearly conclusively that he could play Bond, given his initial attempts at auditioning for the role as a special agent. It would be unfortunate not to acknowledge that he also portrayed Superman on the big screen in “Man of Steel” (2013) and later in Zack Snyder’s “Justice League” (2021). For many comic enthusiasts, Cavill is the epitome of Superman, often compared to the late legendary Christopher Reeve. He has taken on some of the most esteemed roles in film, such as another British icon, Sherlock Holmes, in Netflix’s “Enola Holmes” series.

If it benefits Amazon MGM, they might seriously think about casting Cavill as the next James Bond. It seems like they are leaning towards this choice, given that they have already signed Cavill for a live-action Voltron adaptation and the upcoming Warhammer 40,000 TV series. These projects align well with Cavill’s affinity for the properties, and his existing rapport with Amazon MGM makes it a logical next step. So, what else could be in store for him now that they are in charge?

The War Is Not Enough

Despite currently being involved with a couple of Amazon MGM projects like the “Warhammer” series that was announced in December, it appears Henry Cavill is edging even closer to donning Bond’s iconic tuxedo. Assuming there are no scheduling issues, which seem unlikely given he might be joining the same production company, Cavill could well become the next James Bond. With his consistent charm, fitness, and versatility, Cavill is undoubtedly the most sophisticated, athletic, and adaptable super-spy Hollywood has to offer, and he’s British by birth. Long live the queen! Let’s get Cavill on Her Majesty’s Secret Service.
