Three Marvel Shows Have Been Put On Ice (For Now)

Summary

  • Marvel Studios has shelved three projects indefinitely, including Nova, compromising the future of the MCU on Disney+.
  • Shows like Terror, Inc. and Strange Academy were promising projects leveraging body horror and unique storytelling.
  • The decision aligns with a shift towards quality over quantity, which is part of Disney’s response to an ultra-competitive streaming environment.

At Marvel Studios, there’s always a host of exciting ventures underway, and a fresh update suggests that three of these projects are currently paused. One of these is a much-anticipated solo series focusing on a particular character.

As a die-hard fan, I can confidently say that having Marvel Studios under Disney’s wing has been a game-changer. One of the most significant advantages is the transition of the big-screen franchise to streaming platforms, which has opened up a treasure trove of content featuring beloved characters and intricate world-building. Although the quality of releases can sometimes be hit-or-miss, the potential for engaging shows centered around lesser-known characters is immense, with several already on the horizon.

That being said, it’s important to remember that Marvel Studios’ projects are subject to various influences, just like any other content on the streaming platform. For instance, the upcoming changes within the franchise following the creative overhaul, sparked by “Daredevil: Born Again,” will undoubtedly impact the direction of future projects.

It was apparently time for hard decisions once more at Marvel Studios recently, as multiple upcoming projects for the MCU’s Disney+ offering have now been shelved at the company. As reported by Deadline, both the purported Terror, Inc. and Strange Academy shows being developed for the streamer have been put on hold indefinitely, casting doubt on those projects ever actually seeing the light of day. While Terror, Inc. was still in its early days and hadn’t really been staffed, the project was being anticipated by longtime fans in the know as a unique new direction for an MCU project, leveraging body horror to give fans a new experience in the same vein as Werewolf by Night’s grayscale aesthetic. Conversely, Strange Academy was rumored to share a link with Agatha All Along and already had Echo scribe Amy Rardin attached, as well as fan-favorite star Benedict Wong set to lead.

While both those shows had a lot of potential to bring something great to the MCU, the biggest loss for fans of the franchise is likely the long-awaited Nova project that has been in development. Despite being a major focus at the studio, which replaced announced scribe Sabir Pirzada with Criminal Minds favorite Ed Bernero as the writer and showrunner in December, the Nova series has also been put on ice. The show, which reportedly had eyes on former DCEU star Henry Cavill for an unspecified role, has likewise fallen into the same misfortune as Terror, Inc. and Strange Academy.

While Nova would have reportedly taken inspiration from iconic science fiction IPs, the show and its two contemporaries seem to have been jettisoned into the void. In line with Disney’s general streaming pivot due to the ultra-competitive environment that is streaming, Marvel Studios was always going to have to make some sacrifices. The studio already previously announced a massive reduction in its planned output going forward, espousing a need to focus on quality over quantity. With the sheer number of projects that the company had up on the vision board before the Daredevil: Born Again-inspired changes to its streaming show approach introduced a proper greenlighting process, this always meant that certain projects would be getting the axe. Nova, Strange Academy, and Terror, Inc., all relatively low-level projects and not yet close to principal photography, were unfortunately low-hanging fruit for the reaper at Marvel Studios. While the wording suggests that they’ll be revisited in due time, fans shouldn’t hold their breath for a return to the slate for any of these shows.

I’ve noticed that Marvel Studios has decided to pause several of its upcoming projects, and the ones they’ve selected for delay aren’t exactly promising signs for the future of the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) on Disney+. It seems like they are revisiting the old TV spinoff strategy from past eras, where characters from big-screen adventures would move to the small screen, often without adding much value. This approach has led to mixed results in the past.

The fact that numerous projects designed to introduce fresh comic book characters and breathe new life into the franchise are being delayed is concerning. It suggests that Kevin Feige and others might be inclined to invest more in spinoff projects, which some argue have contributed to the decline of the MCU’s presence on streaming platforms.
