As a dedicated gamer, I can’t help but marvel at the groundbreaking impact of two extraordinary titles that have left their mark on the gaming world – Hogwarts Legacy and Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order. For fans of the wizarding world and Star Wars alike, these games have not only been successful but have also redefined how we perceive a Harry Potter or Star Wars game.
Hogwarts Legacy, an open-world action RPG, and Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order, an action-adventure game incorporating Metroidvania and Soulslike elements, have filled the void many of us had been yearning for in these beloved franchises. They’ve essentially rewritten the script on what these magical worlds could offer in a gaming context.
In essence, the game Hogwarts Legacy resembles an action-RPG that many Harry Potter fans have dreamed of in a wizarding world setting. Meanwhile, Respawn successfully incorporated Soulslike elements into its Jedi series, giving the main character distinct characteristics. These two share numerous similarities; for instance, the Keeper trials in Hogwarts Legacy mirror the Zeffo tombs in Fallen Order. While the Jedi franchise has already seen a sequel, Survivor, and its third installment being announced as its last, the future of Hogwarts Legacy seems more promising and ripe for further development.
Hogwarts Legacy’s Open-World Action-RPG Genre is a No-Brainer
In terms of Harry Potter-themed games, Hogwarts Legacy stands out as one of the best since the Sorcerer’s/Philosopher’s Stone, Chamber of Secrets, and Prisoner of Azkaban. While the original trilogy of adventure games is delightful in its own way, fans of the wizarding world have been eagerly anticipating a full-fledged open-world action role-playing game with extensive customization features.
Hogwarts Legacy might not be the quintessential embodiment of the genre, but it lays a solid groundwork for potential sequels and future Harry Potter universe games to expand upon. The settings of Hogwarts, Hogsmeade, and the Scottish Highlands offer an expansive landscape ripe for player exploration, while the game’s story presents an intriguing new enigma hidden within the castle walls.
It’s quite possible that Hogwarts Legacy could have thrived even if it were solely focused on the famous school, given its impressive success. This suggests that whatever Avalanche Software has planned for the game could be equally captivating (provided that Legacy becomes as iconic as the Star Wars Jedi series). As of a short while ago, it’s reported that over 30 million copies of Hogwarts Legacy have been sold, and with a potential sequel or follow-up already confirmed, it will be intriguing to observe how wizarding world games might develop with Avalanche’s action-RPG serving as a strong foundation.
It’s evident that Hogwarts Legacy, developed by Portkey Games in collaboration with Warner Bros., appears to have struck a chord with the wizarding world, and it would be quite unfortunate if the open-world action-RPG genre were to be discarded prematurely.
Star Wars Jedi Hopefully Won’t Be Taken for Granted When It Concludes
Instead of Star Wars Jedi‘s series, one might argue that its fate was already sealed right from the start. Unlike Hogwarts Legacy, which cleverly unfolds a century prior to the Harry Potter narrative, allowing it to separate itself comfortably from those stories, Star Wars Jedi finds itself situated between Revenge of the Sith and A New Hope, leaving little room for maneuverability.
Additionally, Respawn is speeding up the aging process of its character, Cal Kestis, by using five-year time leaps, which are likely to continue in the upcoming sequel of Survivor. It’s hard to predict when and what the sequel will encompass, but knowing that it will wrap up Cal’s story makes it bittersweet. The Star Wars series has had its fair share of hits or misses over the last few decades, and Fallen Order was a fresh, exhilarating change; combining Soulslike features with Jedi lightsaber combat works well, while Metroidvania elements complement nonlinear map exploration through Cal’s Force abilities.
If “Star Wars” video games adopt Soulslike gameplay and a “Jedi” ending, they could potentially relinquish what propelled them into the contemporary era. Given that Ubisoft’s “Star Wars Outlaws,” an open-world game, didn’t perform as well as expected, there’s a strong chance that future “Star Wars” games might have difficulty maintaining their footing without the “Jedi” series to provide guiding influence.
