Obsidian wants to make a Pillars of Eternity Tactics game after Avowed—but there’s one big problem

The triumph of the game ‘Avowed’ has sparked thoughts in Obsidian Entertainment about creating additional projects within the realm of Eora, initially introduced to gamers through the ‘Pillars of Eternity‘ series. Given that these games are turn-based role-playing games, they could form an excellent basis for a possible ‘Pillars Tactics’ title, and Obsidian is contemplating developing such a game.

Josh Sawyer, who led the development of the “Pillars” series including the acclaimed “Fallout: New Vegas,” has hinted that there is interest within Obsidian Entertainment to create a strategy game titled “Pillars Tactics.” According to Sawyer, while there are many fans of tactics games, the community is not particularly large. He pointed out that this difference between the size and enthusiasm of the tactical game community could pose challenges when developing a potential “Pillars Tactics” game.

Sawyer questioned about the number of developers assigned to a less common game genre, the size it should be, and the time spent on making it visually appealing, similar to ‘Avowed’. He also mentioned that the development scope should be substantial enough to potentially generate profits.

Regardless of the scale of the strategy game or the number of developers involved, it doesn’t automatically mean you’ll make a profit. As the director of New Vegas explains, even if all fans of the genre buy the game, it still might not be enough to recoup costs. There have been numerous popular and successful strategy games in the past, from Fallout Tactics to XCOM series to Warhammer 40K: Mechanicus, with its sequel on the horizon, demonstrating that there remains a market for such projects and a sizable fanbase willing to support new, large-scale strategy games.

As a devoted fan, I’m thrilled to see that “Avowed” has been making a significant impact since its launch. It’s now among the most-played titles on Game Pass and attracting tens of thousands of players simultaneously on Steam. The team at Obsidian seems pleased with the game’s performance, with the director expressing his desire to create more games set in the world of Eora. The prospect of a new tactics game in the “Pillars” universe excites me, although I understand that Obsidian has plenty to ponder before embarking on their next project.

After all, the studio is still developing The Outer Worlds 2, which is set to come out this year.
