Steam Players Want To Filter Out Games That Use Generative AI

One of the most contentious discussions recently has been about incorporating Generative Artificial Intelligence (AI) into video games. On one hand, some developers see potential benefits for production schedules of larger games. However, others fear it could result in a flood of subpar games on the market and job losses for talented artists and developers. It seems that Steam gamers share these concerns and are eager to identify titles utilizing this technology.

Recently, I’ve been excited about a proposal I stumbled upon in the Steam forum’s ideas section. This idea is all about giving gamers the option to sift through games that are developed using Generative AI, a feature that has gained traction since its initial posting this month – no pun intended!

The user AyeforScotland expressed that they are not keen on trying demo versions of games developed with Generative AI, and it’d be beneficial if a filtering option were available to easily exclude such games, similar to how players can currently filter Adult or NSFW content.

Over 27 responses so far, at the time of publication, there seems to be a consensus on favoring this particular feature. Although the reasons share common ground, they exhibit subtle differences as well.

One user said, “I’m not interested in playing a game that no one was excited about creating.” Instead, I prefer to engage with creations that people have passionately developed.

I believe that all AI models are developed using uncompensated work. I prefer not to contribute financially to companies that use these models to create games. Every time you download a demo, it indirectly provides financial support through Steam’s own algorithms.
