Job postings for the newly created PlayStation studio in Los Angeles seem to suggest they are working on a cooperative multiplayer game. Although Sony has not officially revealed or acknowledged this team, information about their first project is starting to leak online.
Over the past three decades, I’ve witnessed Sony’s gaming empire expand significantly, now boasting 15 core game studios and five external development teams under its wing. Some of these studios, like Housemarque, Insomniac Games, Nixxes Software, Naughty Dog, Guerrilla Games, Sucker Punch, and more, were acquired throughout Sony’s journey. On the other hand, some studios, such as Santa Monica Studio, XDEV, Polyphony Digital, San Diego Studio, and others, were born in-house by Sony itself.
Recently, I’ve noticed that Sony has been breathing new life into several internal PlayStation teams, and it seems one of these teams is now embarking on its first gaming project.
As a dedicated gaming enthusiast, I can’t help but share my excitement about the mysterious PlayStation Los Angeles studio, which was set up earlier this year. This team has been keeping their cards close to their chest, with their groundbreaking new AAA IP only being hinted at through job listings.
Recent investigations by Tech4Gamers have unearthed some intriguing new job listings for the PlayStation LA studio, offering a glimpse into their secretive project. One of these open positions is for a Game Systems Designer, and the qualifications listed clearly indicate experience with cooperative multiplayer design principles.
While this might initially lead some to assume a live-service game, considering that the project is currently confirmed only for PS5, it could be hinting at something different. After all, PlayStation live-service games are designed to launch on both PS5 and PC, so the exclusivity of this title to PS5 could suggest a unique direction.
PlayStation LA Studio Game Might Be Built on Unreal Engine 5
In simpler terms, the job posting is for a Senior Game Designer position that requires handling various game elements like weapons, abilities, player movement, AI, and networking (which suggests a new multiplayer game from PlayStation’s LA studio). Moreover, proficiency in Unreal Engine 4 or 5 is essential. This implies that the secretive PlayStation LA team might be using Unreal Engine 5 for their cooperative multiplayer project. Speculations among PlayStation enthusiasts hint that Jason Blundell, previously of Deviation Games, could be spearheading this game’s development.
In 2021, Sony collaborated with a young game development company named Deviation Games to create an entirely new AAA title for the PS5. Regrettably, the collaboration did not thrive as anticipated in the following years, and Sony reportedly stopped funding Deviation in early 2023. The studio struggled for about a year before closing its doors in March 2024. At around the same time, whispers started circulating that Sony was forming a new PlayStation team with former Deviation employees, led by Blundell. It’s possible that the PlayStation LA studio is now home to this team, but we’ll have to wait and see if these rumors prove true.
