As a movie buff enthusiastically diving into the world of “Daredevil: Born Again,” I’ve learned that the initial blueprint for this series was designed to break free from the Netflix show’s narrative threads. However, as plans often do, they shifted and adjustments were made, even affecting the pilot episode. Yet, an intriguing detail about the original pilot has been hinted at by someone in the know, making me eagerly anticipate what could have been!
Chris Ord and Matt Corman initially oversaw Disney+’s “Daredevil: Born Again,” but they were subsequently replaced due to their version of the show not aligning with expectations. Earlier reports suggested that the initial script for “Born Again” fell short in terms of action and connection to the original series. Later, Dario Scardapane came on board to pen the pilot and final two episodes. However, a source hints that Ord and Corman’s original pilot episode might still be part of the project.
There seems to be some confusion about the changes Scardapane made in the Daredevil: Born Again series, as it is not clear what transpired before or after he took over from Ord and Corman. However, a well-known movie insider and scooper, @MyTimeToShineH, claims that the original first episode was aired as episode 2 instead. When asked for more information, the insider revealed that the first episode started with Foggy talking before being shot off-screen, followed by a “One Year Later” title card, and then Fisk’s speech at Times Square after becoming mayor.
In a previous conversation, Scardapane revealed that Foggy’s death was planned before he started working on “Born Again,” but it was written to happen off-screen. However, Scardapane chose to include the shooting incident to make the audience emotionally invested in Foggy’s demise and its impact on Karen, Matt, and the world at large. In the original storyline, Foggy met his end off-screen, but Scardapan felt it was important for viewers to witness the aftermath of such a significant event. Although Foggy died in the opening episode near Josie’s bar, executive producers Scardapane and Sana Amanat hinted at the possibility of Foggy returning, perhaps through flashbacks. As Amanat put it, “He’s not gone forever.” Scardapan reiterated this sentiment, stating, “He’s not gone forever. I can only say that it’s not the last we’ll see of him.
It’s apparent that Scardapane significantly altered the narrative in the series “Daredevil: Born Again”. The inclusion of Foggy’s death on-screen was an astute choice. Since Foggy’s demise had a profound impact on Matt and Karen, it seemed fitting for viewers to witness this emotional event. Utilizing the original script instead of starting from scratch is sensible as long as it reinforces the storyline. If it doesn’t disrupt the story flow or alter the storytelling, then it’s reasonable. However, given that the show underwent a major creative transformation, one might expect a significant portion of the previous writing to be rewritten.
Initially, the plan for the series closely adhered to a formal legal process with minimal action. But after revisions, it started mirroring Netflix’s gripping and high-octane storytelling style. Vincent D’Onofrio endorsed this transformation, viewing Daredevil: Born Again as essentially the fourth season of the show, considering its ties to the original production.
Daredevil: Born Again streams on Disney+.
