The franchise known as “The Legend of Zelda” boasts a vast array of characters, ranging from well-known figures like Link and Zelda, to those who appear briefly in just one game. Characters such as Rauru from “Tears of the Kingdom” have even transitioned from minor roles within the “Legend of Zelda” universe to significant figures in Hyrule’s history. One character from a classic game is ripe for further attention and prominence.
In the manner that the Legend of Zelda series jumps across the universe’s timeline, it becomes effortless for even crucial characters from some games to not reappear in subsequent titles. Characters like Link, Zelda, Ganon, and others who often recur have been theorized as being the reincarnated spirit of the same character, allowing them to move through time by being reborn at the right moment for each new game installment. This idea is typically used to account for major characters, but many recurring side characters in Zelda are also thought to be reborn when they appear in different games spread across the timeline. For instance, Tears of the Kingdom revived Ocarina of Time‘s Sage of Light, Rauru, but he is not the only Ocarina of Time sage who could benefit from a rebirth.
Rauru’s Return shouldn’t be a One-Off for the Zelda Series
For those who recall the older Zelda titles, Rauru may bring memories of a being who shifts between human and owl forms, unveiled as the Sage of Light in Ocarina of Time. However, more recent games like Tears of the Kingdom have given the name ‘Rauru’ to an entirely distinct character. In this game, players were acquainted with Rauru, the king of the zonai, who wed Queen Sonia and established Hyrule’s kingdom. As Link uncovers more about Rauru, Sonia, and Hyrule’s history in the game, it becomes apparent that this Rauru too holds the mantle of Sage of Light. This has led many fans to speculate that Rauru has been reborn, enabling his spirit to assume a similar role in both games.
Fans find themselves pondering if there’s more to the relationship between these characters beyond their shared title as the Sage of Light. While there’s no obvious link connecting them, the significance of the Sage of Light should not be underestimated. In previous Zelda games, it has been hinted at that sages could reincarnate, but it is rare for them to retain the same names as their past counterparts. This might suggest that Rauru’s spirit could have a more substantial impact on the story of Hyrule than initially perceived.
Another Important Sage has been Overlooked for Too Long
In the realm of “Ocarina of Time,” Rauru’s presence was hard to overlook for seasoned gamers, leaving them somewhat perplexed by his appearance given his perceived weakness among the sage characters in the game. On the other hand, a character who has a much stronger emotional bond with players is Saria, the Sage of the Forest, Link’s childhood friend. Unlike Rauru, Saria has only made an appearance in “Ocarina of Time” thus far. However, if Rauru can play a significant role in Hyrule’s history, it’s reasonable to expect that Saria could do the same in a future game. Saria quickly endeared herself to many players due to her strong connections with Link and emotional scenes at the start of the game. Yet, she remains in the past. As a sage, her return could be plausibly explained if she were to reappear in “Tears of the Kingdom,” just as Rauru did, assisting either Link or Zelda on another quest.
In one of the most cherished and critically acclaimed games under the banner of The Legend of Zelda, known as Ocarina of Time, resides a special place. The fact that Rauru is making an appearance in Tears of the Kingdom demonstrates Nintendo’s keen understanding of this. As a beloved character, Saria’s potential resurrection might be met with even more enthusiasm than Rauru’s return, and it would serve as an excellent tribute to the lasting impact of Ocarina of Time. A wonderful opportunity presents itself for Saria and Link to rebuild their friendship spanning generations, as she finally earns the recognition she truly deserves.
