The current storyline, known as Solo Leveling, has progressed to the exciting phase referred to as the Jeju Island Arc. During this arc, a combined team of elite Korean and Japanese hunters with the highest rank (S-Rank) have been formed with the mission to eliminate menacing ants residing on Jeju Island.

Amongst these hunters, there’s Min Byung-Gyu, a kind-hearted individual who was part of the earlier Raid Party. As numerous lives are lost in this storyline of “Solo Leveling”, could it be that Byung-Gyu meets with some fate or change?

Who is Min Byung-Gyu in Solo Leveling?

Byung-Gyu, a top-tier healer hailing from South Korea, is known for his exceptional skills. He debuts in the anime in Episode 1, joining the third Jeju Island Raid Party. During this Raid, his friend Eunseok perishes, leaving him heartbroken and overwhelmed by their failure. Consequently, Byung-Gyu decides to step away from active duty following the Raid. However, when Japan reaches out to Korea for insights into the past Jeju Raids, Byung-Gyu travels to the nation, sharing his experiences alongside other hunters. It is there they uncover that the ants have advanced, now sporting wings.

Besides being friends with high-ranking hunter, Byung-Gyu is also acquainted with Baek Yoonho, the head of the White Tiger Guild, one of Korea’s top five guilds. Notably, the White Tiger Guild prepares its novice members by accompanying them to lower-level gates alongside some of their strongest members. Prior to embarking on the Fourth Raid Party, Byung-Gyu shares drinks with Baek and confides that he’d rather stay away from Jeju Island and instead pursue a career as a history teacher.

Min Byung-Gyu in the 4th Jeju Island Raid Party

This part reveals upcoming plot twists from Solo Leveling Season 2, and the ensuing text may disclose significant events further along in the series.

Initially hesitant, I found myself eventually integrating with the team on Jeju Island, where my skills in healing and shielding proved valuable to my fellow companions. Yet, our victory over the formidable Ant Queen unwittingly summoned a new foe – the Ant King (or Black Ant), an adversary of immense power that we now face head-on.

Recognizing that his mother has passed away, the Ant King demonstrates no compassion in his assault, claiming a significant number of the hunters’ lives. Despite his efforts to shield his companions with his healing and supportive abilities, Byung-Gyu ultimately falls victim to the Ant King’s relentless attack. The Ant King leaves a trail of destruction among the team, claiming the lives of Byung-Gyu, Goto, and nearly half of their comrades.

For the moment, Byung-Gyu’s story does not conclude there. Initially unwilling to be part of the Raid Team, Jinwoo eventually joins and slays the Ant Queen. Due to heavy casualties among the surviving hunters, Cha Hae-In is near death. To save her life, he revives Byung-Gyu as one of his shadow soldiers, and also brings back the Ant Queen as a shadow soldier, now known as Beru.

Following the recovery of Cha Hae-In, Jinwoo honors Byung-Gyu by giving him a peaceful rest, as per his agreement with Baek, who was also part of their team. However, later in the narrative, Cha Hae-In experiences a vision involving Byung-Gyu’s spirit.

Byung-Gyu in the Revised Timeline

In due course, Jinwoo manipulates time to reverse Byung-Gyu’s demise (alongside other deaths), leading to an alternate reality where he lives as a university professor. After earning a doctorate, he continues his ordinary life but is periodically haunted by dreams of his previous passing. Eventually, he transforms into a C-Hunter, yet he opts to concentrate on research rather than pursuing the hunter’s path.

Solo Leveling is available to stream on Crunchyroll, subbed and dubbed.
