Summary
- Some Monster Hunter final bosses are more organic to gameplay, while others are gimmicky and cinematic.
- Ceadeus from MH3 is a unique Elder Ocean Dragon final boss fought in distinct phases – a challenging and epic encounter.
- Akantor in Freedom 2 and Gogmazios in 4 Ultimate offer tough traditional hunts, providing memorable end-game battles.
After spending some time with Monster Hunter Wilds, numerous players have successfully completed the main storyline and defeated its final boss, Zoh Shia. While the ultimate monster in a Monster Hunter game’s narrative isn’t always the strongest due to post-game advancement, these battles often make for incredible spectacles as they mark the culmination of the campaign.
In some video games, the final battles feature more spectacle due to an emphasis on special effects, whereas others design their final adversaries to fit seamlessly into the overall gameplay experience. The structure of Monster Hunter games can occasionally differ, making it unclear which monster is the true end-game boss. This discussion revolves around the monsters encountered at the conclusion of the main storylines, excluding post-game or hidden bosses.
10. Ceadeus
Elder Ocean Dragon

- Monster Type: Elder Dragon
- Elements: Water / Dragon
- Weaknesses: Thunder / Dragon
- Final Boss Appearance: Monster Hunter 3
In the concluding battle of “Monster Hunter 3”, the formidable ocean Elder Dragon showcases an exceptional design. Its physique resembles a long, sleek fish, perfectly adapted for navigating underwater, while its head is adorned with shaggy horns. The sheer size of Ceadeus is staggering, looming over the player, causing destruction by knocking down walls and inducing earthquakes during attacks.
The battle with Ceadeus consists of two unique stages. In the initial phase, you’ll need to chase after the dragon through submerged caves. The climactic encounter follows afterwards. During this final fight, Ceadeus has the ability to unleash a strong water blast at you, induce earthquakes, and trigger rockslides within the arena. This battle can be quite challenging, but having a few underwater catapults strategically placed around the arena may help land some damage on it.
The struggle against Ceadeus involves two different parts. First, you must track down the dragon through submerged tunnels before reaching the final showdown. In this last battle, Ceadeus can attack with a powerful water jet, create earthquakes and cause rockslides in the arena. The fight can be tough, but placing underwater catapults around the arena may help deal some damage to it.
And one more:
The conflict against Ceadeus is divided into two separate sections. Initially, you must chase after the dragon through submerged caves before arriving at the final clash. In this ultimate battle, Ceadeus can attack with a strong water jet, induce tremors and trigger rockslides within the arena. The fight can be challenging, but setting up underwater catapults around the arena may help inflict some damage on it.
These three versions maintain the original meaning while using slightly different wording and sentence structures to make them more natural and easy to read.
9. Lao Shan Lung
Elder Mountain Dragon

- Monster Type: Elder Dragon
- Elements: Dragon
- Weaknesses: Dragon
- Final Boss Appearance: Monster Hunter Generations
Unlike other Elder Dragons, Lao Shan Lung doesn’t boast many elaborate elemental abilities; instead, it primarily uses its immense size and raw power to decimate both hunters and their constructions. However, this choice might be contentious for some hunters, as engaging with Lao Shan Lung isn’t typically a hunt – it’s more of a defensive stand against the monster as players work tirelessly to protect their fortress from destruction.
In summary, whereas others might favor the classic hunt-to-the-death style, Lao Shan Lung marked the initial foray into this grandiose, cinematic siege operation – a concept subsequently revisited in the world of Worlds through Zorah Magdaros.
8. Ukanlos
Grounded Wyvern

- Monster Type: Flying Wyvern
- Elements: Ice
- Weaknesses: Thunder / Fire
- Final Boss Appearance: Monster Hunter Freedom Unite
In the game “Monster Hunter Freedom Unite”, Ukanlos is classified as a flying wyvern, but in the storyline, this creature has lost its ability to fly long ago. Despite being a formidable final boss, it doesn’t truly soar through the skies. Instead, it exhibits powerful physical attributes and can hurl icy rocks using its headplates, as well as unleash an icy beam at distant opponents.
As a devoted fan who’s had my share of battles with Akantor in Monster Hunter Freedom 2, I can’t help but notice the striking similarities in the moveset of Ukanlos. It’s almost as if they’ve shared some secret martial arts training when I get up close and personal in melee combat.
7. Gaismagorm
Abyss Dragon

- Monster Type: Elder Dragon
- Elements: Blast / Bleed
- Weaknesses: Thunder / Dragon
- Final Boss Appearance: Monster Hunter Rise: Sunbreak
Gaismagorm stands out among the Elder Dragon designs in Monster Hunter for being particularly eerie. What sets it apart are its four-part, split-like mouth and the massive forelimbs that grow from its back resembling wings. Unlike most elder dragons, it doesn’t rely on its hind legs; instead, it moves forward by using its front limbs, while navigating and climbing with its enormous forearms.
In Monster Hunter Rise: Sunbreak, Gaismagorm serves as a challenging adversary. This formidable foe employs tiny creatures called Qurio to boost its powers. These leeches can create crystal armor for the boss, enabling it to move swiftly and intensify its strikes. The synergy between Gaismagorm and its symbiotic organisms makes for an awe-inspiring final boss battle.
6. Akantor
Magma Wyvern

- Monster Type: Flying Wyvern
- Elements: Earth / Fire / Dragon
- Weaknesses: Thunder / Dragon / Ice
- Final Boss Appearance: Monster Hunter Freedom 2
In Monster Hunter Freedom 2, the final boss, Akantor, is labeled as a flying wyvern, but it’s more accurately described as an earthbound wyvern with remnants of wings. Similar to Ukanlos, it doesn’t fly freely, instead, it resides in magma areas. Unlike Ukanlos, Akantor can dive into and navigate through magma pools, and it incorporates both earth and fire elements in its assaults.
Akantor is a formidable beast, possessing power nearly equal to an Elder Dragon. Lone adventurers might find this battle challenging, but even with his immense strength, many of Akantor’s attacks can be nullified using flash bombs. This becomes particularly advantageous in a multiplayer setting, transforming what could be a difficult encounter into one that’s surprisingly simple.
5. Dire Miralis
Elder Magma Dragon

- Monster Type: Elder Dragon
- Elements: Fire
- Weaknesses: Ice / Dragon
- Final Boss Appearance: Monster Hunter 3 Ultimate
In the climactic battle of Monster Hunter 3 Ultimate, the fiery Elder Dragon, known as Dire Miralis, serves as the ultimate adversary. This formidable foe showcases an impressive presence as the final boss. Throughout the combat, Miralis can engage both on land and in water, requiring different tactics to defeat it during each phase. When immersed in water, Dire Miralis becomes more susceptible to attacks targeting its back and shoulders. This vulnerability can be exploited to lessen the impact of its magma assaults as the confrontation unfolds.
In this battle, you’ll find numerous strategic items for your advantage, such as ballistae, dragonators, and scattered explosives throughout the combat zone. The armor mode of Dire Miralis is challenging, requiring players to target vulnerable spots or deflect with ineffective attacks. It makes for an entertaining and diverse end-boss encounter.
4. Xeno’Jiiva
Alien Elder Dragon

- Monster Type: Elder Dragon
- Elements: Fire / Dragon
- Weaknesses: Thunder / Dragon / Water / Fire / Ice
- Final Boss Appearance: Monster Hunter World
The final boss before the expansion in Monster Hunter World, named Xeno’Jiiva, is a puzzling Elder Dragon with an otherworldly, almost extraterrestrial look. This creature generates potent blue flames from its bioenergy and employs them recklessly to launch explosive, fiery assaults within the game. Interestingly, Xeno’Jiiva is depicted as a young monster in the game, suggesting it may not fully command its abilities.
In the heat of battle, I witness some of Xeno’Jiiva’s attacks being reckless, almost careening it off balance amidst its own devastation. Beyond its striking appearance, this enigmatic beast is downright sinister and full of secrets. It seems to possess a peculiar charm that draws dying Elder Dragons towards its cocoon, siphoning their energy for its own growth and evolution.
3. Ahtal-Ka
Mantis Empress

- Monster Type: Neopteron
- Elements: Physical
- Weaknesses: Thunder / Water
- Final Boss Appearance: Monster Hunter Generations Ultimate
Among the diverse array of wyverns and Elder Dragons found in the world of Monster Hunter, Ahtal-Ka is a singularly distinctive monster design and final battle opponent. This colossal praying-mantis empress transforms into a golden-bug form for combat and makes use of tools to aid her in battle. The cunning creature isn’t just limited to throwing objects at the player, but can also employ them for more intricate strategies.
As the battle against Ahtal-Ka progresses, the mantis will weave a massive mechanical structure known as Ahtal-Keset. This construct serves as its weapon to assault the player, while it shields its own body. Unlike other Elder Dragons, Ahtal-Ka doesn’t have a deep backstory; however, its challenging final boss fight has left an indelible impression.
2. Gogmazios
Tar Dragon

- Monster Type: Elder Dragon
- Elements: Fire / Dragon
- Weaknesses: Fire / Dragon
- Final Boss Appearance: Monster Hunter 4 Ultimate
In the game Monster Hunter 4 Ultimate, the Elder Dragon Gogmazios, who is covered in tar, is a dragon that many gamers will recall. Although it’s an enormous Elder Dragon, battling Gogmazios is similar to fighting any other large monster, but it’s definitely challenging. Unlike some boss fights which can be more of a spectacle, this encounter feels more like hunting down a regular monster, and for some players, that might even be more appealing.
Gogmazios, a flying creature in MH4U, possesses the ability to soar through the skies and attack the player with its laser-blasting breath. During battle, it will switch between aerial and ground assaults multiple times. An intriguing aspect of its design is the dragonator, an ancient weapon trapped in tar on its back. In the boss fight, players can climb onto Gogmazios’ back, break through to dislodge the dragonator, and utilize it as a powerful tool.
1. Shara Ishvalda
Subterranean Elder Dragon

- Monster Type: Elder Dragon
- Elements: Physical / Stun
- Weaknesses: Ice
- Final Boss Appearance: Monster Hunter World: Iceborne
Shara Ishvalda is the latest Elder Dragon introduced as the final boss in the expansion of Monster Hunter World called Iceborne. This subterranean dragon has a unique defense mechanism: it forms a protective shield made of rocks and minerals, with bone-like structures resembling fingers instead of wings. As the battle continues, the shell will crack open to reveal the more fleshy appearance of the dragon beneath.
Ishvalda possesses the ability to burrow through the ground, causing earthquakes and quicksand. Being quake-resistant and having skills that aid mobility such as mirewalker can help in evading this. However, Ishvalda has other formidable tactics at its disposal. Its devastating nova attack, long-range sonic beam, and capacity to stun and disable players make it a challenging opponent. Yet, overcoming Ishvalda as the final boss offers an exciting and memorable experience.
