More recently, it’s been reported that Spectre Divide and Mountaintop Studios are set to close their doors next month following only a few months on the market and the disappointing performance of the game’s initial season. Spectre Divide, an innovative first-person multiplayer shooter, debuted in August 2024, but its player base rapidly decreased.
Due to insufficient revenue despite available funding, The Mountaintop game will be shut down because it’s not generating enough income to keep running or sustain the studio. In reaction, FragPunk team, creators of another recently launched free-to-play multiplayer shooter, posted an image on social media that has been criticized as offensive by The Mountaintop developers.
That Might Not Age Well
The FragPunk post has now been removed, but not before eagle-eyed gamers grabbed screenshots:
Among the initial individuals who posted this online was Marcus Schubert, a producer based at Mountaintop Studios. On LinkedIn, he expressed:
NetEase Games, this is truly unfortunate. It’s regrettable. For those who may not be aware, the leading post represents a goodbye letter, signaling that Mountaintop Studios is ceasing operations.
NetEase, known for its gaming giant status and the phenomenal success of Marvel Rivals, is also the publisher of FragPunk. Although this post may have been created by a social media intern or community manager, it doesn’t mean we should dismiss it casually.
In times when studios shutting down, cancellations, and job losses seem to be fragmenting the industry, it would be more productive and compassionate if publishers and developers stood together, rather than ridiculing the predicament of a dedicated team’s struggles. Looking at recent events such as XDefiant and Concord, FragPunk might want to consider that they themselves could be in a similar situation and should avoid casting judgement from a position of perceived safety.
Currently, FragPunk boasts over 110,000 concurrent players on Steam, whereas Spectre Divide reached a maximum of 26,200. But you might recall that XDefiant once had millions of players, and we’ve all seen how that story unfolded.
