On Friday, a fresh trailer unveiled the broadcast month for the highly anticipated anime adaptation of Kei Urana’s dark fantasy shōnen manga titled Gachiakuta. Announced in June 2024 following whispers about an upcoming anime, this series has been generating buzz and captivating fans online. The recently released trailer for Gachiakuta introduced the production team behind the series and offered a glimpse into the voices of some characters. The story unfolds in a gloomy, dystopian setting where the underprivileged inhabit a floating metropolis called the Sphere, a haven for the wealthy leading extravagant lives and discarding their waste and undesirables into an endless chasm. Rudo, a rebellious outcast, who is believed to be the offspring of a notorious villain, experiences a dramatic shift in his life when he is falsely accused of murdering his foster father and banished to the desolate expanse below, known as “The Abyss”. After miraculously surviving the fall, Rudo encounters the grim truth of the world beneath, which teems with monstrous creatures, known as “Trash Beasts”, spawned from the debris that has fallen from the Sphere. To seek vengeance on his father’s killer and clear his name, Rudo must form an alliance with a group called “Cleaners,” individuals who have honed a peculiar ability essential for survival in this world polluted by filth.

As a diehard manga enthusiast, I’ve been eagerly following the thrilling action saga known as “Gachiakuta,” penned by the gifted manga artist Kei Urana and the graffiti genius Hideyoshi Andou. This captivating series has graced the pages of Kodansha’s Weekly Shōnen Magazine since February 2022, with its chapters compiled into a staggering 13 volumes as of December 2024.

The worldbuilding and power system in “Gachiakuta” have garnered widespread acclaim, earning it the Global Special Prize in the Comics category of the Next Manga Awards 2022. For those who haven’t yet discovered Kei Urana’s work, learning that Atsushi Okubo, the mastermind behind “Fire Force,” has chosen Urana as his successor might just be the push needed to dive into this series.
