Gachiakuta Plot and Background Information

Studio BONES’ Next Shōnen Anime Project

The story unfolds in a gloomy, dystopian setting where the underprivileged inhabit a floating metropolis called the Sphere, a haven for the wealthy leading extravagant lives and discarding their waste and undesirables into an endless chasm. Rudo, a rebellious outcast, who is believed to be the offspring of a notorious villain, experiences a dramatic shift in his life when he is falsely accused of murdering his foster father and banished to the desolate expanse below, known as “The Abyss”. After miraculously surviving the fall, Rudo encounters the grim truth of the world beneath, which teems with monstrous creatures, known as “Trash Beasts”, spawned from the debris that has fallen from the Sphere. To seek vengeance on his father’s killer and clear his name, Rudo must form an alliance with a group called “Cleaners,” individuals who have honed a peculiar ability essential for survival in this world polluted by filth.

One-of-a-kind shonen anime, Gachiakuta, has made a remarkable impression in recent years by seamlessly combining intense action sequences with an extraordinary artistic flair. Crunchyroll is thrilled to collaborate with Kodansha and Bones Film to share this captivating narrative with fans globally, exclusively on the Crunchyroll streaming platform.

As a diehard manga enthusiast, I’ve been eagerly following the thrilling action saga known as “Gachiakuta,” penned by the gifted manga artist Kei Urana and the graffiti genius Hideyoshi Andou. This captivating series has graced the pages of Kodansha’s Weekly Shōnen Magazine since February 2022, with its chapters compiled into a staggering 13 volumes as of December 2024.

The worldbuilding and power system in “Gachiakuta” have garnered widespread acclaim, earning it the Global Special Prize in the Comics category of the Next Manga Awards 2022. For those who haven’t yet discovered Kei Urana’s work, learning that Atsushi Okubo, the mastermind behind “Fire Force,” has chosen Urana as his successor might just be the push needed to dive into this series.

The anticipation for the anime adaptation is sky-high, with BONES Film – the production studio behind “My Hero Academia” and “Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood” – at the helm. The trailer for “Gachiakuta” has already unveiled an impressive roster of talent, including:

  • Fumihiko Suganuma, who is serving as a series director for the very first time
  • Hiroshi Seko (series composition, Attack on Titan, DANDADAN, Mob Psycho 100) on series composition
  • Satoshi Ishino (character designs, No.6) as character designer and chief animation director
  • Legendary composer Taku Iwasaki (music, Gurren Lagann, Noragami, The Irregular at Magic High School) on music.

The series also boasts a star-studded main cast, including:

  • Aoi Ichikawa (Gurimu Igarashi, Blue Lock) as Rudo
  • Katsuyuki Konishi (Fuegoleon Vermillion, Black Clover) as Enjin
  • Yoshitsugu Matsuoka (Inosuke, Demon Slayer) as Zanka
  • Yumiri Hanamori (Yamada Asaemon Sagiri, Hell’s Paradise: Jigokuraku) as Riyo

Gachiakuta will be available for streaming globally, except in Belarus, Russia, and the Asian region. However, it will be accessible in India on Crunchyroll.
