Starfield’s 2025 Strategy: Can It Compete with The Outer Worlds 2?

As of now, Bethesda’s plans for Starfield remain mysterious. In the past, the developer had promised that the space adventure would get annual expansions, which has left many Starfield players wondering when the next one will be announced. Last year, fans finally got a glimpse into House Va’ruun with Shattered Space, but its short length left many wanting more.

Ever since Shattered Space dropped, Bethesda has been pretty quiet about any of its plans for this year. Between the desire for another Starfield DLC and the hope that The Elder Scrolls 6 finally shows up again, the anticipation surrounding Bethesda projects is strong. Fallout 76 and its addition of playable Ghouls is one of the few things the developer has been vocal about. It’s unclear when Starfield will get its next big update, but when it does, Bethesda will want to watch The Outer Worlds 2 very carefully.

Starfield and The Outer Worlds 2 Could Go Head-to-Head

The Outer Worlds 2 Offers a Space-Faring Competitor

  • Although set to release this year, The Outer Worlds 2 has yet to reveal an official launch date.
  • The game is developed by Obsidian Entertainment, the studio behind Fallout: New Vegas.

The history shared between Bethesda and Obsidian is a rocky one. When Bethesda gave Obsidian the opportunity to make Fallout: New Vegas, the latter was promised to receive a bonus if the game managed to acquire an 85 Metacritic score. Unfortunately, the game ultimately came up short by only one point, receiving an 84. New Vegas continues to be a favorite entry for a lot of Fallout fans, and that’s what made the arrival of the first Outer Worlds so exciting. The Outer Worlds is far more sci-fi-heavy than Fallout, but it still boasts a similar type of charming humor and strong world-building that New Vegas is known for.

The Outer Worlds was well-received, making a sequel possible, and now that it’s set to launch this year, going up against Bethesda’s ambitious space-based title could set the stage for some compelling competition. Starfield, The Outer Worlds, and its upcoming sequel are all open-world sci-fi RPGs, making the former’s expansion plans tricky. The Outer Worlds 2 could quickly take the wind out of Starfield‘s sails if Bethesda isn’t careful.

Starfield added its first land vehicle, the REV-8, last year, which proved to be a game-changer for planetary traversal.

Starfield is in Need of a Win

While Starfield was well-received by critics at launch, player feedback tells a different story. Players claiming the game’s world is empty has left Starfield a mixed bag for a lot of people. Shattered Space didn’t help, either, as many found the expansion’s story underwhelming. The next DLC may not be officially announced yet, but a lot of fans are hoping for something more robust than what Shattered Space offered. Starfield could still surprise, of course, but Bethesda may want to make a move sooner, rather than later.

Starfield‘s next DLC is rumored to be titled “Starborn,” but this has yet to be confirmed.

Starfield News Could Be Imminent

At the beginning of the month, the official Starfield Twitter account addressed questions regarding the game’s 2025 plans. The tweet stated, “The team has been hard at work, and while we’re not ready to share specific details just yet, we have a lot of exciting things planned for the game this year that we can’t wait to talk about when the time is right.”

While this message is incredibly vague, it at least hints that something could be on the way fairly soon. Of course, only time will tell what the next update has in store for fans, but until then, The Outer Worlds 2 looming in the distance could shake up Starfield‘s 2025 goals.
