With so many games now relying on ongoing services and online play, it feels like games are disappearing faster than ever. We’re seeing more and more announcements of games shutting down β either because the technology is too old, or simply because they didn’t attract enough players to keep the online servers running. It’s always a letdown when a game you enjoy is no longer available.
Sometimes when online games stop working, there’s a big announcement, like with the game Concord, which shut down a mere two weeks after it came out in September 2024. But often, these games just quietly disappear. As of mid-2026, 52 games have already shut down. While it might seem like EA is responsible for many of these closures, other well-known games have also been affected.
More games are being removed from digital stores, though players who already bought them can still enjoy them. This list details the games that have been completely taken offline and are no longer playable as of 2026.

BioWare Said Goodbye to Anthem in January 2026
The beginning of the year saw several Electronic Arts (EA) games being discontinued, including the troubled action RPG Anthem by BioWare. While Anthem received a mixed reception when it first came out in 2019, BioWare attempted to address player feedback and essentially restart the game in 2020. Unfortunately, those efforts didnβt succeed, and development stopped in 2021. The gameβs servers were finally shut down earlier this year.
When Anthem stopped working, two other Electronic Arts (EA) games, The Sims Mobile and NBA Live 19, were also discontinued that same month. While The Sims Mobile is gone, fans can still play The Sims 4, and a new version, Project Rene, is currently being developed. Unfortunately, NBA Live 19 was the last game in that series, and EA canceled it in 2019.
Highguard Only Lasted 45 Days Before Being Shut Down
Highguard is the latest live-service game to disappoint players and quickly shut down. After a flashy announcement at The Game Awards in 2025, the game launched a month later and was canceled just two months after that. This failure highlights a growing trend of gamers becoming tired of live-service titles. While some predicted Highguard would struggle, many hoped developer Wildlight Entertainment could succeed in the competitive free-to-play hero shooter genre. Unfortunately, Wildlight canceled the game in March after it lost 90% of its player base within a week of release.
Last-Gen Consoles Lost Support from Several Games in 2026
The latest generation of consoles has been gaining momentum, and that means older consoles are starting to lose support for online games. In 2026, two popular titlesβthe gacha game Genshin Impact and the competitive shooter The Finalsβstopped offering online services for PlayStation 4 and Xbox One players. While both games continue to be available on newer systems, those still using last-generation consoles can no longer play them online.

PUBG: Blindspot Came and Went With Little Notice
So, I remember checking out PUBG: Blindspot when it first came out in early access on Steam back in February 2026. It was a pretty different take on PUBG β a 5v5, top-down shooter. Sadly, it didn’t last long. It was taken down from Steam and shut down completely by the end of March β basically, just over a month after launch. It was kinda shocking, honestly, because you’d think a game with the PUBG name would get more traction. It only peaked at around 3,000 players, and then the numbers just plummeted before they pulled the plug.
Classic EA Game Shutdowns Continued into April 2026
It’s been a tough year for EA game fans, and more titles are going offline this April. Specifically, the online servers for the PlayStation 3 versions of Dragon Age: Inquisition and Plants vs. Zombies: Garden Warfare were shut down on April 28th. It’s disappointing to see these older games become inaccessible, especially considering their importance for game preservation.
Notable Games Still Facing Shutdown in 2026 and Beyond
- Rec Room β June 1
- Spellcasters Chronicles β June 19
- Battlefield Hardline β June 22
- The Elder Scrolls: Blades β June 30
- New World (in-game purchases disabled) β July 20
- NBA 2K25 β December 31
- TopSpin 2K25 β December 31
2026 has already seen many games close, and unfortunately, more are planned to shut down in the coming year. Popular VR game Rec Room will close on June 1st, signaling the end of a significant chapter for virtual reality fans. Recently, Quantic Dreamβs Spellcasters Chronicles was announced to be closing next month, just three months after its early access launch.
It’s a bummer to hear that some games I’ve enjoyed are going offline. The Elder Scrolls: Blades is ending June 30th, and Battlefield Hardline’s servers are shutting down next month too. Even further out, New World is stopping in-game purchases in July 2026, which basically means the servers will close in January 2027. And sadly, NBA 2K25 and TopSpin 2K25 are losing their online features at the end of this year. It’s always a little frustrating when you put time into a game that eventually gets shut down. But it’s good to remember there are live-service games that stick around for years and become real staples of the gaming world, so it’s not always a losing battle!
