Escape From Tarkov, the challenging online shooter, officially launched after a long period of development six months ago. Things have been relatively calm since then, but the game’s creators in Russia are now planning some major changes – starting with a new winter update.
Escape From Tarkov just received a significant update, adding a new story chapter, a completely new map to explore, and several improvements designed to make completing quests much more enjoyable.
Update 1.0.5.0 is the first new content release since Jean Tyulegenov left his position as lead game designer earlier this month. It’s unknown if he worked on this update before his departure, but it signals a fresh start for Battlestate Games.
Escape From Tarkov 1.0.5.0 Features New Map

The latest Escape From Tarkov update kicks off with a new in-game event called Icebreaker.
The main event revolves around the Paradigm Shipping icebreaker, which became stuck during the Tarkov blockade. It’s a player-versus-environment (PvE) experience no matter how you play. You won’t be matched with other players, but you can explore the Icebreaker map with a squad of up to three people.
Alongside the limited-time event, Escape From Tarkov’s main storyline is continuing with a new chapter focused on the icebreaker ship. If you recognize the name “Boreas,” it’s intentional – it’s a deliberate connection!
The name ‘Boreas’ comes from the Borealis, a ship featured in Half-Life 2: Episode One. Within the game’s story, the Borealis was used for secret teleportation experiments, which ultimately caused it to become stranded in a far-off, isolated place – much like the blocked-off city in Escape from Tarkov.
The ship is conducting secret teleportation experiments, which ultimately cause it to become stranded in a remote and isolated place, similar to being trapped in the city of Tarkov.
Okay, so the new Icebreaker map has this faction called The Wedge, and seriously, they’re totally giving off Combine vibes from Half-Life. I’m talking the same kind of gear – H&K weapons, all black uniforms, the whole nine yards – and they’ve even added a new boss to fight! It’s like they pulled straight out of City 17.
You can begin the Boreas quest in one of two ways. If you’re already far into the game, go to your hideout and use the Intelligence Center (you’ll need it upgraded to level 3) to pick up a distress signal from an icebreaker ship.
You can also start this part of the story by locating one of the Paradigm Shipping posters hidden around Tarkov. These posters appear in random locations on walls throughout all the maps. You’ll find more of them in city areas like Customs and Streets of Tarkov compared to more remote maps like Woods or Lighthouse.
New Players Can Actually Complete Quests Alone
Even if you’re a new player and not focused on tackling difficult enemies right away, this Escape From Tarkov update still offers something useful for you.
Escape From Tarkov has often been difficult for new players to pick up, partly due to its complex nature and a community that can be unwelcoming. This update addresses two of the biggest hurdles that discourage beginners, making the game more accessible.
One of the biggest problems with this generally great game has been its quests. They often require you to search massive areas for very small items with little to no help. This, combined with the game’s harsh and dangerous environment, usually leads players to immediately look up guides online instead of trying to discover things themselves.
This update includes a better directional indicator to help players find items needed for quests. It doesn’t change the fact that these quests can be repetitive, but it will save you time searching around, especially when you’re under attack.
Quests have long been one of the weakest links in this otherwise excellent extraction shooter
Because Escape From Tarkov is a game about completing missions and then escaping, we’ve added a feature to make those escapes easier to understand. Many maps use flares to signal a safe exit, requiring players to stand in a specific spot and launch a flare to clear out snipers. While this sounds straightforward, it was often unclear if you’d done it correctly, leading to players running into enemy fire while trying to leave.
From update 1.0.5.0 onward, when you successfully launch a flare, the boundary snipers will now respond with a green flare, letting you know it’s safe to proceed. This will save a lot of frustration, as many raids were previously ruined by incorrectly launched flares.
To balance out making the game a bit simpler, Battlestate Games has introduced new items for streamers. This means there are now even more collectibles to find as you try to earn the coveted Kappa container.
I’m so excited – Escape From Tarkov is out now on Steam and the official site! If you’re like me and want to dive into all the changes, you can check out the full patch notes for update 1.0.5.0 right here.
