The highly acclaimed JRPG Metaphor: ReFantazio, winner of multiple Game of the Year awards and a nominee at many more, is currently available to download for free with a Game Pass subscription. However, it will be removed from the service on May 31st. Upon its release, Metaphor: ReFantazio received glowing reviews and earned the Grand Prize at the Japan Game Awards. While Astro Bot ultimately won Game of the Year at The Game Awards 2024, Metaphor still took home three awards: Best Narrative, Best Art Direction, and Best Role-Playing Game.
Metaphor: ReFantazio is a new game developed by Studio Zero, a team within Atlus – the company famous for the Persona and Shin Megami Tensei series. The game’s director, Katsura Hashino, previously led the development of Persona 3, 4, and 5. While Metaphor is a completely new story and not connected to those franchises, players have noticed similarities in gameplay and style to the Persona games.
Metaphor: ReFantazio Still Free to Download on Game Pass Until May 31
On May 19th, Microsoft announced that several games, including the popular Metaphor: ReFantazio and Persona 4 Golden, will be removed from Game Pass on May 31st. However, new titles are being added, such as Remnant 2, Final Fantasy 6, and the new Forza Horizon 6. If you want to play Metaphor: ReFantazio for free through Game Pass, you’ll need to subscribe to Game Pass Premium, Ultimate, or PC Game Pass and download it before May 31st.
The game Metaphor: ReFantazio is quite lengthy, typically taking 60 to 100 hours to finish. Players currently enjoying it through Game Pass might not be able to complete it before it’s removed on May 31st. Others who were considering trying it might be put off, knowing they won’t have enough time to finish the game. Fortunately, games leaving Game Pass are often available at a discounted price, and you can still continue your saved progress if you decide to purchase it.

Although some players are disappointed that Metaphor: ReFantazio is leaving Game Pass after a year, being on the service likely introduced the 2024 JRPG to many who wouldn’t have tried it otherwise. Because it’s a brand new game, it should also be easy for new players to get into.
More games are being added to Microsoft’s Game Pass subscription service later this month, including Luna Abyss, Echo Generation 2, and Crashout Crew. These will be available to download at no extra cost for Game Pass Ultimate members. Microsoft also announced that they’ll be holding an Xbox Showcase in June, but haven’t shared any details about what to expect.
