Fans of Dragon Quest spotted some unlisted videos on Square Enix’s YouTube channel, leading to speculation about potential announcements celebrating the franchise’s 40th anniversary. These videos were organized into a Dragon Quest playlist, but weren’t accessible to viewers when this was reported.
On Wednesday, May 27th, the Dragon Quest series will celebrate its 40th anniversary. The very first Dragon Quest game came out in Japan for the Famicom in 1986, but it wasn’t released in the West until 1989, where it was known as Dragon Warrior on the NES. More recently, in October 2025, Square Enix released Dragon Quest 1 & 2 HD-2D Remake for modern gaming systems, offering a fresh way to play the classic games. Square Enix began the 40th-anniversary celebrations in March 2026 with the release of Dragon Quest 7 Reimagined.
Dragon Quest Day Announcements May Be Imminent
Okay, so I’ve been checking out the Dragon Quest hype, and it looks like some fans over on Reddit might have stumbled onto something big for Dragon Quest Day. Apparently, Square Enix accidentally uploaded eight private videos to their YouTube channel under the Dragon Quest playlist a few days ago! It started getting noticed around May 23rd. We already knew the creator, Yuji Horii, hinted at a special stream for the 40th anniversary, but Square Enix hasn’t officially announced anything yet. It’s all just rumors for now, but it’s definitely getting me excited!
Game Rant confirmed that a Dragon Quest playlist on YouTube included eight videos hidden from public view, though they weren’t accessible at the time of checking. This sparked speculation among fans about what the secret videos might contain, with many guessing they’d be related to Dragon Quest 12: The Flames of Fate. While Square Enix hasn’t revealed much about DQ12, Yuji Horii mentioned in May 2025 that development was going smoothly. Besides Dragon Quest 12, Square Enix is also working on highly anticipated games like Final Fantasy 7 Remake Part 3 and Kingdom Hearts 4.
With the Dragon Quest franchise celebrating its 40th anniversary, many fans are hoping to see Dragon Quest 12 revealed. However, it’s still uncertain if that will happen. One announcement that seems likely is a Nintendo Switch 2 version of Dragon Quest 11: Echoes of an Elusive Age. Ratings for the game appeared in Taiwan in late April 2026 for the Switch 2, suggesting an updated version of the popular title could be coming to Nintendo’s new console, especially since the original DQ11 launched on the first Switch in 2019.

Last year, Square Enix hinted that they were planning more remakes of classic Dragon Quest games. While titles like Dragon Quest 8 are fan favorites, some older games are only available on outdated systems like the PlayStation 2 and Nintendo DS. With an announcement expected on May 27th, we’ll soon find out what Square Enix has been working on.
