Goku’s discovery of Super Saiyan God in Dragon Ball Z: Battle of Gods was a turning point. It made him the strongest fighter again, something he hadn’t been since the battle with Cell. More importantly, it revealed a whole new level of power, showing Goku that he still had much further to grow and hadn’t come close to reaching his full potential across the multiverse.
Super Saiyan God is a transformation that happens when a Saiyan uses divine energy instead of their normal power. Goku achieved this through a special ritual, but incredibly strong Saiyans might be able to unlock it simply by training intensely. This God form, along with its different versions, is one of the most powerful transformations in Dragon Ball Super, and it has certain benefits compared to Super Saiyan Blue.
8. God’s Crimson Radiance
Users: Goku
Goku initially achieved the Super Saiyan God transformation through a special ritual in Battle of Gods, but it was only temporary. During his fight with Beerus, the power faded, and he reverted to his standard Super Saiyan form without noticing. However, being exposed to the God Ki energy did have a lasting effect – Goku’s natural power level permanently increased.
God’s Crimson Radiance is a form achieved by combining the basic Super Saiyan transformation with a bit of the power of a God. Essentially, after the events of Battle of Gods, whenever Goku transforms into a regular Super Saiyan in Dragon Ball Super, he’s actually using this enhanced form.
7. Ritual Super Saiyan God
Users: Goku, Yamoshi
If six Saiyans with pure hearts come together, five of them can perform a special ritual. This ritual dramatically increases the power of the sixth Saiyan, allowing them to transform into Super Saiyan God. However, this initial version of Super Saiyan God is only temporary and fades with extended fighting – as seen with Yamoshi long ago and with Goku in the movie Battle of Gods.
The initial Super Saiyan God transformation, achieved through the ritual, is the least powerful version of the form, which is normal. This ritual version is essentially a starting point for understanding and using God Ki. Once a Saiyan learns to control God Ki naturally, they can unlock a more powerful Super Saiyan God form that they can activate at will, like other Super Saiyan transformations.

6. Saiyan Beyond God
Users: Goku, Vegeta
Saiyan Beyond God is an offshoot of Super Saiyan God that allows the user to use all of SSG’s power without actually needing to transform. Saiyan Beyond God is only canon to the Dragon Ball Z movies and was retconned by the Dragon Ball Super anime and manga, where Goku and Vegeta still need to turn Super Saiyan God in order to use its full power.
Training together on Whis’ Planet allows Goku and Vegeta to fully control God Ki, effectively integrating the power of Super Saiyan God into their natural abilities. However, within the Dragon Ball Super storyline, they simply increase their base power level instead of physically absorbing the SSG power. While God’s Crimson Radiance is essentially a more powerful form of Super Saiyan, Saiyan Beyond God is different – it’s marked by a white aura and doesn’t alter the user’s appearance.
5. Super Saiyan God
Users: Goku, Vegeta, Shallot, Giblet, Shallet
After a Saiyan learns to access God Ki – either through a special ritual or by other means – they can train to transform into a Super Saiyan God at will. Vegeta, for example, achieved this simply by training intensely on Beerus’ planet, without needing the ritual that Goku used. A key benefit of Super Saiyan God, compared to Super Saiyan Blue, is that it allows for more stable Ki control.
In the Dragon Ball Super manga, using Super Saiyan Blue too often in a single fight drastically weakens a character. For example, during the Universe 6 Tournament, Vegeta’s power fell by 80% simply by demonstrating the form to Cabba. Super Saiyan God is much more reliable; it can be used repeatedly like Kaioken, letting fighters quickly access Super Saiyan Blue for stronger attacks without exhausting their energy.
4. Ultra Supervillain Super Saiyan God
Users: Vegeta
In Dragon Ball Xenoverse 2, Fu creates a dark form called Ultra Supervillain to corrupt powerful fighters. In a different timeline where Vegeta, instead of Goku, completed the God Ritual to challenge Beerus in Battle of Gods, Fu corrupts Vegeta, transforming him into an Ultra Supervillain Super Saiyan God.
Vegeta achieves a tremendously powerful new form, resembling Ultra Ego with a purple color scheme and aura, making him far stronger than any of the Z-Fighters in his universe. He’s ultimately defeated not by force, but because he regains control during his battle with Super Saiyan God Goku. This immense power increase also allows him to master Super Saiyan Blue more quickly than he did in the original timeline.
3. Dark Super Saiyan God
Users: Giblet
In the game Dragon Ball Legends, Dark Ki is a dangerous energy type that can completely overwhelm anyone who uses it. Giblet, the twin brother of Shallot, is a very strong Ancient Saiyan capable of transforming into a Super Saiyan God. After becoming infected with Dark Ki, Giblet learns to control it and combine it with his Super Saiyan God form, creating a unique Dark Super Saiyan God transformation.
Dark Super Saiyan God is incredibly powerful, capable of battling opponents like Super Saiyan Blue Goku with Kaioken multiplied by 20, and even defeating Syn Shenron, a major villain from Dragon Ball GT. However, unlike regular Super Saiyan God, using Dark Super Saiyan God puts a tremendous amount of stress on the user’s body, potentially causing severe damage similar to the effects of Kaioken.
2. God Broly
Users: Broly (Dragon Ball Z)
God Broly is the central antagonist in Dragon Ball Z: The Real 4-D at Super Tenkaichi Budokai, a ride at Universal Studios Japan. The story doesn’t explain how this version of Broly gained God Ki, but he’s essentially a combination of the Super Saiyan God form and Broly’s unique Legendary Super Saiyan power.
God Broly is incredibly powerful, able to overpower both Super Saiyan Blue Goku and Vegeta simultaneously. He’s only beaten when Goku merges with the energy of the crowd to become Super Saiyan Blue God Fusion Goku. While stronger than Goku and Vegeta were at the beginning of the Tournament of Power, he would likely lose to Goku in his Ultra Instinct Sign form or Vegeta in his Super Saiyan Blue Evolved form.
1. True Ultra Instinct Super Saiyan God
Users: Goku
Throughout the Granolah the Survivor arc, Goku discovers a way to combine Ultra Instinct with his Super Saiyan transformations. By staying calm during his battle with Granolah, he successfully activates Ultra Instinct while in his Super Saiyan God form. This marks Goku’s initial progress towards mastering True Ultra Instinct – a powerful state that allows for instinctive reactions and attacks, boosted by the increased power of his God form.
True Ultra Instinct Super Saiyan God is the most powerful form of Super Saiyan God, essentially giving Goku a double power-up. This allowed him to survive a normally fatal attack from Granolah. Combining this form with Super Saiyan God gave Goku incredible speed and power. However, Goku soon mastered Super Saiyan Blue and replaced True Ultra Instinct Super Saiyan God with the even more powerful True Ultra Instinct Super Saiyan Blue.
