Microsoft is now allowing users to remove Copilot from their computers if they choose not to use it. This change gives people more control over the software and lets them prevent it from running in the background.
Okay, so getting rid of Copilot isn’t as simple as just uninstalling it. Microsoft actually added a special tool in the latest Windows 11 update – it’s called “Remove Microsoft Copilot app.” You can find it in the Group Policy settings, specifically under User Configuration, then Administrative Templates, then Windows Components, and finally, Windows AI. It’s a bit hidden, but it’s there if you want to remove it!
This appears to be a reliable solution for completely removing AI tools. Users are saying this new method actually works, unlike simply uninstalling Copilot through the usual Programs menu, which often left the tools still running in the background.
While the feature is user-friendly, Microsoft is making it more accessible to IT professionals and administrators for managing tools across organizations. This prevents accidental removal by average users and ensures larger businesses can control these settings, which is why it’s located within Group Policy rather than being readily available to everyone.
Okay, so here’s the deal: if you’re running Windows 11 Home, the normal way to get rid of Copilot doesn’t work. But I found a workaround! You can create a special entry in the Windows registry – it’s called a ‘WindowsAI’ key. Once you run it, it’ll remove Copilot and other system tools after you restart your computer. It’s a bit technical, but it works!
People have been requesting an option to remove Copilot from their computers for some time, but Microsoft hasn’t yet provided one. The company seems to think Copilot should remain installed and take up space, even if users don’t currently want it, in case they change their minds later.
