Bungie Staff Were Blindsided by Destiny 2 Ending Support – Report

So, things are pretty rough over at Bungie right now. Last week, I was shocked to hear they’re ending support for Destiny 2 – apparently player numbers have been dropping and The Final Shape didn’t land as well as they’d hoped. Now, Bloomberg is reporting that there are going to be layoffs, and even worse, Destiny 3 is on hold indefinitely. What’s really frustrating is that the Bungie team found out about all this at the same time we did – they weren’t given a heads-up at all. It’s a really tough situation for everyone involved.

According to a Forbes report, most Bungie employees were surprised by the news that support for Destiny 2 would end on June 9th. Sources at the company said that the vast majority of staff didn’t find out about the decision until it was made public. Only a small number of teams were aware beforehand, and many of those were already working on Bungie’s new game, Marathon, or finishing up Destiny 2’s last update.

It’s becoming common for company executives to not inform developers about major announcements. A recent example is NVIDIA’s reveal of DLSS 5, which used footage from Resident Evil Requiem. Many developers at Capcom were just as surprised to see their game featured as the public was. This happens because leadership often doesn’t share these kinds of big studio updates with the development teams, creating a strange distance and making it seem like those in charge don’t care about the developers’ feelings.

The future of Bungie is currently unclear. PlayStation has shown it’s willing to close successful studios, like Bluepoint Games and Japan Studio. While Bungie isn’t necessarily facing closure, its new game, Marathon, isn’t attracting many players, and rumors of layoffs suggest the situation isn’t ideal.
