9 Legendary Gaming Bounty Hunters Cooler Than Star Wars’ Mando

Mandalorians first became well-known with Boba Fett’s appearance in The Empire Strikes Back and are now one of the most recognizable groups of bounty hunters in popular culture. They’re easily spotted by their distinctive Beskar armor, helmets, and jetpacks, and have appeared in various forms throughout nearly all Star Wars movies, shows, and games.

Many fans consider Din Djarin, known as Mando and the star of The Mandalorian and the new series The Mandalorian and Grogu, to be the most famous bounty hunter. He’s a truly remarkable and ruthless character, easily one of the coldest bounty hunters ever shown on television.

Video games feature a lot of memorable bounty hunters, and some have become truly iconic characters. From that impressive group, we’ve picked out nine that we think are the coolest.

Geralt (The Witcher Series)

Monsters Aren’t the Only Target

Geralt might not see himself as a bounty hunter, but that’s essentially what he is in The Witcher games. As a trained Witcher, he earns money by completing contracts – tracking down monsters and lifting curses. And it’s not just monsters he hunts; Geralt often takes on jobs involving dangerous people, particularly in the games.

As a big fan of the Witcher books, I always loved how Geralt tried to avoid contracts that meant killing people. But honestly, in the game, they take a little more liberty with that part of his character. You end up on a lot of quests where you’re hunting down or eliminating people – sometimes even Witch Hunters or bandits! It’s cool, but definitely different from how Geralt acts in the books.

Geralt remains calm and composed even in difficult situations. If he announces he’s there to hunt monsters, anyone nearby who’s up to no good should be worried.

Urdnot Wrex (Mass Effect Series)

A Living Legend Among a Dwindling Population

The Krogan from the Mass Effect universe are easily among the most frightening organic species imaginable. Their incredible toughness comes from extra organs, backup nervous systems, nutrient storage, and naturally armored skin. Combined with their aggressive personalities and relentless drive, they make perfect bounty hunters.

Okay, so Krogans are already super intimidating, right? But Battlemasters… those are Krogans with biotics! Basically, they’re strong and they can use what feels like magic. And among all the Krogans, Urdnot Wrex is a total legend. He’s a Battlemaster, and he’s just as deadly with a shotgun as he is sharp-tongued. Seriously, the guy is a powerhouse.

In the game Mass Effect, Commander Shepard encounters Wrex while trying to stop a criminal named Fist. If Wrex joins your team, he immediately defeats Fist with gunfire, without even allowing a conversation. This direct and efficient approach is typical of a famous and feared bounty hunter in the Citadel.

Stranger (Oddworld: Stranger’s Wrath)

Hunter Turned Protector

The Stranger, the main character in the video game Oddworld: Stranger’s Wrath, is a bounty hunter called a Steef, and he might be the last one alive. Unlike typical bounty hunters who use weapons like swords or guns, the Stranger uses a special crossbow that shoots live creatures instead of arrows to capture his targets.

The Stranger embodies the stoic hunter archetype, rarely revealing his inner thoughts unless necessary. He’s direct and observant, a careful listener who only speaks when he needs to, and possesses the patience to endure daily frustrations while pursuing his goals.

Even though he seems tough, the Stranger also has a kind heart. By the end of the game, he starts looking after the Grubbs, proving he’s a truly admirable Steef.

John Marston (Red Dead Redemption Series)

The Hunted Becomes the Hunter

John Marston first appears in Red Dead Redemption 2, but he originally gained notoriety as a bounty hunter in the first Red Dead Redemption game. He joined the Van der Linde gang when he was young and became an outlaw, participating in robberies, kidnappings, and killings with them. After a falling out with Dutch and seeking revenge on former gang members, John decides to start a family and leave his criminal life behind.

This peace doesn’t last, as the head of the Bureau of Investigation takes John’s family hostage, compelling him to track down his old gang. Sadly for those former companions, John is still incredibly skilled, systematically eliminating them. While the extent to which John follows a code of honor is determined by the player, his marksmanship is undeniable.

Samus Aran (Metroid Series)

Taking On Intergalactic Missions

Samus Aran is one of the most famous characters in video game history, instantly recognizable as a skilled bounty hunter. She’s the star of the Metroid series and has appeared in many games over the years, from the very first Metroid to the Super Smash Bros. franchise. Samus is known for her powerful weapons and ability to defeat challenging enemies.

While Samus is famous for her powerful Power Suit, she’s incredibly effective even without it. She might seem quiet and reserved, but that hides her determination and strength. Even in her Zero Suit, armed with only a Paralyzer, she’s a dangerous opponent – few could ever feel secure against her.

Ba’Gamnan (Final Fantasy 12)

Tenacious and Relentless Pursuit

In Final Fantasy 12, Ba’Gamnan is obsessed with capturing the Sky Pirate Balthier and relentlessly pursues the player’s party. He works with his Bangaa brothers – Gijuk, Bwagi, and Rinok – and will do anything to catch Balthier, including kidnapping, offering bribes, and using trickery. He even kidnaps party member Penelo hoping to lure Balthier out, but releases her once she’s served her purpose.

Though Ba’Gamnan is determined and can be harsh, he isn’t simply interested in killing. He prefers the thrill of the chase itself and avoids unnecessary bloodshed. He’s willing to deceive others to gain an advantage – for example, he’ll post fake wanted posters to set up ambushes. Even though he’s failed many times, Ba’Gamnan is incredibly tough and has survived several close calls while tracking Balthier and his crew.

Zegram Ghart (Rogue Galaxy)

Loyalty Isn’t Part of the Contract

Though he looks older, Zegram Ghart is actually just 26 years old. He’s a highly skilled bounty hunter who works with the Dorgengoa Pirates in the game Rogue Galaxy, taking on risky missions throughout space. Appearing in a fantastic but often overlooked JRPG, Zegram keeps to himself and doesn’t seem interested in becoming close to Jaster or the rest of the pirate crew, preferring to work alone.

Okay, so Zegram is seriously torn. He cares about money, but he loved Jane, his ex-fiancée, just as much, if not more. He knows money can’t bring back real feelings, which is why he hesitated when someone offered to bring Jane back to life in exchange for betraying his current group. But then he found out how they’d resurrect her, and it just wasn’t right. It made him choose between his job and doing what he felt was best for Jane, and ultimately, he sided with his heart. He decided to let her rest and threw in with Jaster instead, helping him out on his adventures. It’s a tough choice, but I think he made the right one in the end.

V (Cyberpunk 2077)

Living for Two

In CD Projekt Red’s critically acclaimed game, Cyberpunk 2077, you play as V, a mercenary striving to become a legend in the sprawling city of Night City. Starting as a relatively unknown gun-for-hire, V takes on jobs from different contacts, quickly earning a reputation as a skilled and formidable mercenary.

V is incredibly versatile and skilled at almost everything. Whether it’s pinpoint accuracy with weapons, secret missions, or even high-speed racing, V excels at it all.

V’s life is a poignant example of the saying from the Te-Tao Ching by Lao Tzu: “The flame that burns twice as bright burns half as long.” They don’t have much time, and the Relic containing Johnny Silverhand’s engram is damaging V’s mind. Ultimately, V’s fate – and how their story concludes – will depend on the relationships they build and who stands with them in the final fight against Arasaka.

Sol Badguy (Guilty Gear Series)

The Gear to End All Gears

Sol Badguy wasn’t always known by that name. He used to be Frederick, a brilliant scientist dedicated to helping humanity alongside his friends. But a disastrous experiment, fueled by betrayal, transformed him into a Gear – a powerful artificial being with magic and incredible strength. Now calling himself Sol Badguy, he seeks revenge on That Man, who kidnapped the woman he loves, Aria. To get closer to his enemy, Sol works as a bounty hunter, dismantling criminal groups and eliminating other Gears.

Sol Badguy, though often blunt and even harsh in his interactions, is fundamentally a good person haunted by his history. He can be aggressive and quick to fight, but he’s also thoughtful and self-aware, always acknowledging his role in past conflicts. Despite preferring to stay out of other people’s problems, Sol is caring and determined, as seen in his dedication to raising Sin and his commitment to helping Elphelt, even when he doubts it’s the right thing to do.
