Christopher Barrett Explains Why Oryx is Oryx, and the Destiny Logo
Christopher Barrett, who used to be a game director at Bungie, has revealed the origin of the name ‘Oryx’ from the game Destiny. He originally used the name – taken from the character in Margaret Atwood’s novel Oryx & Crake – for his characters in the games EVE Online and World of Warcraft. When he joined Bungie, he brought the name with him, and it eventually became the name of a memorable boss in Destiny. This isn’t entirely shocking, as Bungie has always drawn inspiration from many different sources, including books, mythology, and real-world beliefs.
Interestingly, Barrett revealed he created the iconic Destiny logo back in 2008 when pitching the game to a publisher. He says the logo wasn’t meant to represent just one thing, but rather a collection of ideas – symmetry, a sense of celebration, and even, jokingly, “maybe a religious thing. Or maybe a fidget spinner.” As Bungie transitions to a new chapter, it’s fascinating to discover the origins of its most famous symbols.
Barrett isn’t alone in sharing thoughts as Destiny 2 comes to an end. Luke Smith, a former Game Director at Bungie, said the closure is painful not because of what the game was, but because of what it could have been. It’s a sad way to say goodbye to the community. While Marathon will continue the spirit of Bungie’s games, it’s a very different experience and won’t simply replace the beloved Destiny franchise.

Currently, there are no plans for Destiny 3. Bungie is facing layoffs as it operates under Sony, and despite a large petition from fans, the series will likely be put on hold indefinitely. This is especially surprising considering how popular Destiny 2 was, and there isn’t another game quite like it available right now, leaving many players without a similar experience. On the bright side, many players have formed lasting friendships through the game.
