To succeed in NTE Mahjong, you’ll need to master combining different tile sets – Pungs, Kongs, Straights, and Pairs – to create a winning hand. After each game, any remaining City Stamina can be used to earn Fons. A typical game takes about seven minutes. Winning a game restores a large amount of stamina, but losing repeatedly makes it harder to recover. This guide will help you improve your Mahjong skills in NTE.
Where To Play Mahjong In NTE
In NTE, you can play Mahjong at the Little Sparrow Maid Cafe in Miguel District. Alternatively, you can purchase a Mahjong table for your apartment. However, to play a solo game on the table, you’ll need at least three NPC roommates.
Choose a seat to decide who goes first. When playing against the computer, the seat you pick doesn’t really matter.
You can now find teammates or invite other players. If you’re just starting out, we recommend playing with the computer-controlled characters first.
In NTE, you’ll need to raise your relationship level with a character—called their Bond level—before you can play Mahjong with them at the Little Sparrow parlor.
Once ready, press the Ready button on the bottom-right.
Starting A Mahjong Game In NTE
Let’s start by looking at the buttons on the left. I suggest enabling the Win button – it will automatically claim a win whenever it can. You can also turn on Play for automatic gameplay, and Pung to hide the Pung prompt. Unless you’re an experienced player, it’s best to leave the Pung button turned off.
For now, keep the Play button off as well, so you can play manually.
In this game, you’ll encounter three different suits: characters, circles, and bamboo.
Each suit includes tiles numbered one through nine. Counting the circle and bamboo (stick) tiles is easy – just count the symbols on each tile. However, the number tiles use Chinese characters, so if you don’t recognize them, a quick online search for “Mahjong number tiles” will help.
Each tile comes in a set of four, meaning there are four of each type – four Circle 1 tiles, four Circle 2 tiles, four Circle 3 tiles, and so on.
Next, choose three cards that are all the same suit. You’ll be giving these cards to the other players, so avoid passing them cards that match or could help them create sequences.
To play Mahjong in NTE, you need to eliminate one entire suit from the game. To win, your winning hand can only contain tiles from one or two suits, and the suit you ban cannot be included in your hand.
- Red: Numbers/characters
- Yellow: Circles/dots
- Green: Bamboos/sticks
Choose the suit you have the fewest tiles of, so you can eliminate it faster. In the picture, I only had two number tiles, so I selected the red button to discard all number suits.
The suit you select will appear as a dark tile in your hand, serving as a reminder to discard it. Keep in mind that you can’t win the game if you still have any cards from that suit.
You can tell what other players have banned by looking at the symbols on their profile picture. Red symbols represent numbers, yellow symbols are circles, and green symbols are sticks.
Now, the game finally begins.
How To Play Mahjong In NTE
Okay, so as a new player trying to figure out NTE Mahjong, I’ve learned that winning isn’t about being first – it’s simply about having the most points when everyone’s run out of tiles! The scoring seems a little complicated, but I’m starting with the basic rules to get a handle on things.
First, you need to know about Pung, Kong, Sequence Tiles, Pair, and Win.
Pung (Three Pairs)
A ‘pung’ happens when you collect three identical tiles. That’s why it’s best not to throw away matching tiles early in the game – you could help your opponents get ahead!
If you have a pair of matching tiles, you can take a discarded tile from another player, which is called a Pung.
If you collect three identical tiles in your hand, that’s called a Pung. Unlike other calls, you don’t have to reveal it right away, as there’s no disadvantage to waiting.
Kong (Four Pairs)
Hold onto those tiles until someone plays the fourth one. Since there are four of each tile in the game, that fourth tile will be the very last one.
There are various types of Kong (four pairs).
When you take a discarded tile from another player, you get +100 points, and they get -100.
If you’ve claimed a set of three tiles (Pung) and then draw a fourth matching tile, you can reveal a Self-Drawn Kong, earning you 300 points while deducting 100 points from each other player. However, if you’ve already called a Pung, you can’t complete a Kong using a tile discarded by another player.
If you collect four identical tiles in your hand without having previously declared a Pung, you can reveal a Concealed Kong. This earns you 600 points, while deducting 200 points from each of the other players.
When you become comfortable with the game, you’ll realize you don’t always need to use the ‘Pung’ and ‘Kong’ calls, but it’s best to learn them well first.
You can call a Kong even after you trigger Win.
Sequence Tiles (Straight)
Sequence tiles can’t be played directly, but they can help you complete a winning hand. To form a valid hand, you need to collect three tiles of the same suit.
For example, in the images above, we can have a sequence of either:
- Circle 1 + Circle 2 + Circle 3
- Circle 2 + Circle 3 + Circle 4
- Circle 3 + Circle 4 + Circle 5
Okay, so the game works by making sequences, and each sequence always has three tiles – not any other number. And here’s the thing: once you use a tile in a sequence, you can’t use it again. Because of that, and since there’s only one of the ‘Circle 3’ tile in the pictures, I can only make one complete sequence. It’s pretty straightforward, but you have to plan carefully!
If you have an extra copy of a tile, you can use it in different combinations. For instance, if you have…
- Circle 1 – Circle 2 – Circle 2 – Circle 3 – Circle 3 – Circle 4
You can make two groups: Circle 1 + Circle 2 + Circle 3, and Circle 2 + Circle 3 + Circle 4.
Pair
Okay, so ‘Pairs’ is super easy. Basically, you just need to find two tiles that are exactly the same. Like, in the game I’m playing, I’ve already got…
- Circle 1 Pair
- Circle 2 Pair
- Circle 8 Pair
- Bamboo 7 Pair

Win
Now that you know the basic tile combinations, the next step is to know how to call a Win.
To call a Win in NTE Mahjong, you must:
- Have one Pair.
- All the other tiles must either be in a group of Pung, Kong, or Straight.
For example, in the image above, I’ve played:
- Circle 4 Pung
- Circle 7 Pung
And in my hand, I have:
- Bamboo 1 (Pung)
- Circle 1
- Circle 3
- Circle 5 (Pair)
So all I’m missing is Circle 2 to make a sequence of Circle 1 + Circle 2 + Circle 3.
If you’re about to win and need just one more tile, the game will give you a helpful clue. You can find this clue on the right side of the screen by clicking the question mark icon. The number at the bottom of the clue tells you how many tiles are still in play. Keep in mind, the game only reveals information about tiles that have been discarded or played – it won’t tell you if another player is holding a specific tile.
As a player, I love how the game helps me out! Whenever I draw a tile, if it brings me closer to winning, the game actually shows me exactly which tile I should get rid of – it puts a little golden arrow on it, which is super helpful!
In the image, I played Circle 5 and need to get rid of Bamboo 9. When I look at Bamboo 9, I realize I need a Circle 2 to win the round.
If you’re collecting sets of cards, you might find you have a lot you can get rid of to achieve victory. For instance, in the picture, I could discard a ‘Circle 2’ card, and if I then draw a ‘Circle 4’, I’d win. That winning hand would look like this:
- Bamboo 9 Pair
- Circle 3 + Circle 4 + Circle 5
- Circle 3 + Circle 4 + Circle 5 (same sequence, yes)
- Circle 6 + Circle 7 + Circle 8
If I discard Circle 3, my winning hand will change into:
- Bamboo 9 Pair or Circle 5 Pair
- Bamboo 9 Pung or Circle 5 Pung
- Circle 2 + Circle 3 + Circle 4
- Circle 6 + Circle 7 + Circle 8
If I discard Circle 5, my options are:
- Bamboo 9 Pair
- Circle 1 + Circle 2 + Circle 3 or Circle 2 + Circle 3 + Circle 4
- Circle 3 + Circle 4 + Circle 5
- Circle 6 + Circle 7 + Circle 8
If I discard Circle 8, I can win by:
- Bamboo 9 Pair
- Circle 1 + Circle 2 + Circle 3 or Circle 2 + Circle 3 + Circle 4
- Circle 3 + Circle 4 + Circle 5
- Circle 5 + Circle 6 + Circle 7
It’s definitely possible to win without declaring any Pung or Kong. As shown in the picture, I only need a Bamboo 4 to complete my winning hand.
- Bamboo 3 + Bamboo 4 + Bamboo 5
- Bamboo 6 Pair
- Bamboo 9 Pung
- Circle 3 + Circle 4 + Circle 5
- Circle 5 Pung
Keep an eye on Circle 5 – it can help you win if you don’t use it as a Kong. However, revealing it as a Concealed Kong could earn you a large bonus of 600 points, but it would mean sacrificing your chance at a regular win.
Win Scores In NTE Mahjong
Now that you understand how to win, let’s look at scoring. I mentioned you can earn 600 points by playing Concealed Kong, but you’ll need to rebuild your winning hand. Depending on the scoring, this can be a worthwhile strategy.
As a fan of NTE, I’ve noticed there are a bunch of different ways to get a winning hand. And it’s interesting – how many points you win or lose actually depends on how you get those tiles! Do you snag a discarded tile from someone else, or do you draw it yourself? Here’s a quick guide to show you what I mean:
| Hand | Point | Explanation |
|---|---|---|
| Common Hand | +100 for you -100 for the person who discarded the tile | A mix of Pung/Kong, Straights, and Pairs of two tiles. Tile can be anything from 1s to 9s. |
| Self-Draw Common Hand | +600 for you -200 for each player | A mix of Pung/Kong, Straights, and Pairs of two tiles. Tile can be anything from 1s to 9s. But you draw the winning tile. |
| Kong Discard Loss | +200 for you -200 for the person who discarded the tile | After someone called a Kong, take the tile they discarded to trigger Win. |
| All Simples | +200 for you -200 for the person who discarded the tile | A mix of Pung/Kong, Straights, and Pairs of two tiles. Tile can’t include 1s or 9s. |
| Self-Draw All Simples | +1200 for you -400 for each player | A mix of Pung/Kong, Straights, and Pairs of two tiles. Tile can’t include 1s or 9s. But you draw the winning tile. |
| Win Kong-Draw | +1200 for you -400 for each player | Draw a tile and call a Kong, then the next tile gives you the Win. |
| Pure One-Suit | +400 for you -400 for the person who discarded the tile | A mix of Pung/Kong, Straights, and Pairs of two tiles. All tiles are the same suit. |
| Self-Draw Pure One-Suit | +2400 for you -800 for each player | A mix of Pung/Kong, Straights, and Pairs of two tiles. All tiles are the same suit. But you draw the winning tile. |
| All Pungs | +400 for you -400 for the person who discarded the tile | No Straights in the winning hand. |
| Self-Draw All Pungs | +2400 for you -800 for each player | No Straights in the winning hand. But you draw the winning tile. |
The simplest way to win a hand is with a ‘Common Hand,’ but it gives you the fewest points. You can also win by focusing on a single suit, only making Pung or Kong combinations, or by avoiding the 1 and 9 tiles. These methods earn more points than a Common Hand, though they’re more challenging. If you draw all the tiles yourself, your score will be considerably higher.
After you win a round, you can continue playing, and if you get the right card, you can win again.
Looking at the example image, if I obtain a Circle 1 – either by drawing a card or taking one from another player – I can immediately claim a win. If I were to get another Circle 1, or even a Circle 4, I could claim another win and score points again.
As a gamer, I’ve learned it’s best to focus on hands that let me rack up multiple wins. It’s not about winning each round, but about scoring the most points overall when all the tiles are gone. So, I always try to maximize my points for the long game!
