Okay, so Square Enix is basically restarting development on Dragon Quest 12! They’ve even changed the subtitle because they’re heading in a new direction with the game. As a long-time fan, I’m really excited – Dragon Quest has been around forever, since the 80s, and everyone’s been waiting for the next big installment. It’s awesome to see the series doing so well lately, especially with those fantastic HD-2D remakes of the older games. Hopefully, this fresh start means Dragon Quest 12 will be even better!
The last main installment in the Dragon Quest series came out in 2017 for 3DS and PS4, and was later made available on other systems. Dragon Quest 11 was the best-selling game in the series to date. Now, Square Enix is bringing a definitive version of the game to the Nintendo Switch 2 on September 24th, potentially reaching an even wider audience.
A New Direction for Dragon Quest 12
Five years ago, Square Enix announced Dragon Quest 12, initially titled The Flames of Fate. Now, the game will be called Dragon Quest 12: Beyond Dreams, signaling a significant shift in the game’s development. The developers have essentially restarted the project, meaning fans will have to wait longer for its release. Currently, there’s no estimated release date. The game will still feature character designs by Akira Toriyama and music by Koichi Sugiyama.

The upcoming Dragon Quest 12 will feature a new protagonist who’s been experiencing unusual visions in their sleep. According to Yuji Horii, the creator of the Dragon Quest series, the game’s story will center around a journey to a world beyond dreams – which is also the inspiration for the title. While there were previous reports suggesting a darker tone, it seems the developers are now heading in a different direction with the narrative.
Don’t expect to see Dragon Quest 12 or Kingdom Hearts 4 anytime soon – Square Enix has been taking a long time with its releases lately, and fans are understandably impatient. The good news is that early reactions to Dragon Quest 12‘s new look and trailer have been very positive. Many longtime fans are excited about what they’ve seen, especially since it appears to be a return to the series’ classic roots. While innovation is welcome, players appreciate that the core elements that make Dragon Quest special seem to be staying intact.

It remains to be seen if completely restarting development will benefit Dragon Quest 12. Publishers have changed course on games before, abandoning earlier ideas. While a longer development process is frustrating for fans, a better final product would make it worthwhile. Luckily, fans won’t have to wait too long for a new Dragon Quest experience, as Square Enix also announced Dragon Quest Monsters: The Withered World for several platforms. Though a release date hasn’t been announced, the publisher says it’s “coming soon.”
