Valve is significantly increasing the price of all Steam Deck OLED models. The price jump isn’t small – some versions will cost up to $300 more. Valve says the reason for the increase is rising costs for memory and storage.
Valve is raising the price of the Steam Deck. The 512GB version will now cost $789, up from $549, while the 1TB model will increase from $649 to $949.
It’s currently unclear how the recent price increase will impact the cost of the Steam Deck in South Africa. Because the OLED model isn’t officially sold here and is imported unofficially, we won’t know the new price until it appears for sale online at the higher cost.
The Steam Deck OLED currently costs R18,999 for the 512GB version and R21,999 for the 1TB version. I believe these prices are much too high, largely because the devices are being imported through unofficial channels.
With recent price increases on other tech, fans are concerned Valve’s Steam Machine might also become very expensive when it finally launches, if it ever does.
