In a move that has us all saying, “Wait, what?” MP Rickard Nordin decided to slide into the DMs of Minister of Finance Elisabeth Svantesson with a written inquiry about the possibility of adding bitcoin to Sweden’s foreign reserves. And get this—he suggested funding it with the bitcoin that police and customs have seized. Because nothing says “responsible government” like using confiscated crypto! 💸
Sweden’s Bitcoin Bonanza: Are We Joining the Crypto Party? 🎉
Sweden is now the latest country to throw its hat into the bitcoin ring, and honestly, who can blame them? Rickard Nordin, a member of the Swedish Parliament (yes, they have those), has penned a letter to Minister Svantesson asking if we can make this whole bitcoin-in-reserves thing happen. Apparently, other countries are doing it, including the U.S., and we all know how much Sweden loves to keep up with the Joneses. 🏡
In his letter, Nordin waxes poetic about the benefits of holding some of the country’s reserves in bitcoin, claiming that “its monetary properties are comparable to those of gold.” Because nothing screams stability like a digital currency that can fluctuate more than my mood on a Monday morning! 😅
He also points out that bitcoin is often used as a payment method and a hedge against inflation. “It’s also a lifeline for freedom fighters dealing with authoritarian regimes,” he added, because why not throw in a little heroism while we’re at it? 🦸♂️
Nordin finally asked:
Have the Minister and the Government considered giving the Riksbank the chance to include bitcoin in Sweden’s foreign exchange reserves? And will they actually do it? Because, you know, that would be a fun little experiment!
He suggests starting this reserve in a “budget neutral” way, using the bitcoin seized by Swedish authorities. Because if you’re going to gamble, you might as well use the house’s money, right? 🎲
While the minister isn’t obligated to respond, this inquiry has certainly stirred the pot, bringing the topic into the public eye. The Minister has until April 16 to respond, so stay tuned for what could be the most exciting thing to happen in Swedish finance since… well, ever! 📅
In January, European Central Bank President Christine Lagarde confidently stated that bitcoin would not be entering the reserves of any central banks in the General Council, where Sweden is a member. So, you know, no pressure! 😬
