Assassin’s Creed is Signaling the End of the Open-World RPG Era

There’s a clear divide among Assassin’s Creed fans, mirroring the shift in the games themselves. Earlier titles focused on action-adventure, stealth, and free-running, while AC Origins introduced an open-world RPG style. Some players still prefer the original Assassin’s Creed games, while many others enjoy the newer RPG format. Ubisoft seems to be recognizing this and is now trying to appeal to both groups – a welcome change, even if it’s a bit late.

What if Assassin’s Creed Origins hadn’t started the trend of huge, open-world games, but instead led to each Assassin’s Creed title being truly distinct? The series needed a change after players grew tired of the older action-adventure style, but Odyssey, Valhalla, and Shadows simply expanded on the Origins formula to an excessive degree. Instead, each game could have offered a completely different experience, and that’s the direction Assassin’s Creed seems to be heading.

Black Flag and Mirage Are Not the Only Games to Buck the RPG Trend

The latest Assassin’s Creed games suggest the era of sprawling open-world games might be coming to an end. While Origins, Odyssey, and Valhalla were massive open-world RPGs, Ubisoft recently shifted gears. Before releasing Assassin’s Creed Shadows set in Japan, they offered Assassin’s Creed Mirage, a return to the series’ roots. Mirage plays like a modern sequel to the original Assassin’s Creed, and its more focused design creates a tighter, more enjoyable experience.

Following the recent launch of Assassin’s Creed Shadows, a remake of Assassin’s Creed 4: Black Flag is coming in July. This version includes new content while also streamlining some aspects of the original, and early signs suggest it’s a positive move. While some fans have expressed concerns about changes, particularly to the combat system in AC Black Flag Resynced, the remake seems to be progressing well overall. Ubisoft made it clear from the start that this isn’t a full role-playing game, despite earlier speculation, though it does include some lighter RPG elements – something the original Black Flag also had. It’s common for games to borrow features from different genres.

More Games

The potential issue would arise if, after releasing these non-RPG games, Ubisoft immediately launched three more open-world RPGs – but that’s not what they intend to do. Ubisoft’s plan for future Assassin’s Creed games is promising because it’s diversifying the types of experiences offered. According to Insider Gaming, here’s what they’re currently working on:

  • Assassin’s Creed Jade
  • Assassin’s Creed Invictus
  • Assassin’s Creed Hexe
  • Assassin’s Creed Scarlet
  • Assassin’s Creed Stardust
  • Assassin’s Creed Emerald

Each of these represents an internal project codename—for example, ‘Invictus’ won’t be the final game title. However, I’ve suggested that Assassin’s Creed Hexe keep its codename as the official name when the game releases.

Assassin’s Creed Jade

Currently in development, Assassin’s Creed Jade is a mobile game created through a partnership between Tencent and Ubisoft. Set in Ancient China around 300 BC, the game lets players design their own assassin and explore the world. It will be free-to-play on both Android and iOS. While it offers open-world features, it’s important to remember that the experience of playing on mobile differs significantly from playing a large-scale open-world game on PC or consoles in terms of time commitment and progression.

Assassin’s Creed Invictus

The upcoming game, Assassin’s Creed Invictus, is reportedly a multiplayer title similar to Fall Guys. While this might not appeal to all players, early testing seems to be focused on making it enjoyable. A bit of lighthearted multiplayer action could be a fun addition to the Assassin’s Creed series if executed well. Importantly, it’s refreshing to see something different from the usual open-world RPGs. This new direction might not thrill longtime fans, but it could attract a new audience to the Assassin’s Creed franchise.

Assassin’s Creed Hexe

I’m most excited for Assassin’s Creed Hexe in the series. It’s rumored to be set during the horrific Wurzburg Witch Trials, and will focus on storytelling and stealth gameplay, rather than a large, open world. This feels right for the setting, as the Wurzburg trials were particularly brutal and resulted in the deaths of many people.

Honestly, from what I’ve seen in the trailers and read about the story, this game looks like it’s going to have some really creepy horror vibes, which is awesome. Plus, a lot of the people who made Assassin’s Creed Black Flag are working on this, and it makes total sense why they’d start with a remake of Black Flag – they clearly know how to make a great game!

Assassin’s Creed Scarlet

The next big open-world RPG from the Assassin’s Creed series is expected to launch after Assassin’s Creed Hexe. Ubisoft’s decision to release three games before this one, and leave at least four more before Assassin’s Creed Shadows, seems strategic. Reports suggest this new game is a departure from the usual Assassin’s Creed formula – something fans have been wanting. Insider Gaming reports this project was previously called Assassin’s Creed Nebula and will feature three distinct locations: India, the Mediterranean, and the Aztec Empire. A game that lets you explore multiple settings within the Assassin’s Creed universe is a really exciting prospect.

Assassin’s Creed Stardust

This is the second remake planned for the Assassin’s Creed series, following the release of Black Flag Resynced. Many fans are predicting that Assassin’s Creed 1 will be the next game to receive a remake.

Assassin’s Creed Emerald

The next multiplayer game in the Assassin’s Creed series, currently known as Emerald, is likely either the previously rumored Codename Raid or a project called Echoes. If it focuses on raids, it could reveal more about the game’s world, story, and the conflict between the Assassins and Templars. According to Insider Gaming, at least one of these multiplayer projects has been cancelled, and the new game appears to be more grown-up than Invictus. Given that Assassin’s Creed used to include multiplayer, it will be interesting to see how these multiplayer titles fit into the future of the series.

RPG 3

A new RPG is expected to be released after Scarlet, but details are currently unknown. Its development may depend on various factors.

Remake 3

I’m hearing rumors of another remake after Black Flag and the second one drop, but honestly, details are super scarce. It sounds like whether or not they actually make it will depend on how well the first two do – so fingers crossed they’re successful!

Assassin’s Creed is Entering the Third Era

For a long time, Ubisoft released smaller action-adventure games every year. But fans eventually grew tired of this frequent release schedule, so Ubisoft shifted to making fewer, much larger games with huge open worlds – a change similar to the challenges the Assassin’s Creed series faced. Now, as that era ends, Ubisoft is planning something new: a mix of different game types, including story-driven adventures, multiplayer experiences, remakes, and mobile games. They’re even planning a large open-world RPG that will stand out with three distinct locations. As a longtime fan, this new approach sounds very promising.
