Japanese police have arrested two people for stealing Pokémon trading cards worth over $200,000. Pokémon cards have been popular with collectors and players ever since the game first launched in 1996, shortly after the original Pokémon Red and Green games for Game Boy. For over three decades, these cards – both old and new – have remained highly sought after, with early editions often being particularly valuable.
A transport van carrying Pokemon cards was robbed in Tokyo, Japan, in December. The stolen cards were worth approximately $213,000 (34 million yen). Police have arrested two suspects, though they believe around $32,000 (5 million yen) worth of cards may have already been sold. The theft involved around 300 cards and occurred in the Chiyoda Ward. Both suspects have reportedly confessed to the crime, and one of them knew the van’s route because he worked for a company that handled the card shipment.
