Games Where You Are The Strongest

Being the most powerful character can be both a blessing and a burden, especially in video games. It usually means you’re stuck with a difficult, unavoidable mission, or constantly facing overwhelming odds. If you could easily defeat every enemy one by one, like in the game Doom, there wouldn’t be much of a challenge.

The main characters in these games are incredibly powerful – they’re either gods, have unbelievable abilities, or carry devastating weapons. While the games can still be challenging, these characters are definitely among the strongest in their worlds.

7. Okami

The Power of the Sun (and a Paintbrush)

Even twenty years after it first came out, Okami remains incredibly popular. This was clear at the 2024 Game Awards when the announcement of a sequel was met with huge excitement. What makes this game so special? A lot of it comes down to its beautiful watercolor-inspired art style, which creates a magical and playful atmosphere. Combined with its rich use of Japanese folklore, the game immediately captured my attention when I first saw screenshots.

Beyond just looking beautiful, the special abilities in Okami are central to how you play the game. As Amaterasu, a sun goddess who appears as a wolf, you wield a Celestial Paintbrush that gives you incredible power over the environment. It’s truly one of the best drawing mechanics in any video game! You can control time, change the weather, and even create objects. The demons you encounter aren’t much of a challenge, and I especially love how you can fling enemies around with attacks, then use the Celestial Brush to trap them and find their weak points. This system is incredibly well-executed and makes the quest to save the world even more engaging.

6. Asura’s Wrath

Is That You, Kratos?

If you enjoyed the intense god-killing action of the God of War series, you’ll likely love Asura’s Wrath. The stories share a lot of similarities: Asura is a powerful warrior whose wife is killed by the Guardian Generals (who become the Seven Deities). They’re plotting to steal the power of his daughter to increase their own strength. Driven by grief and rage, Asura sets out to destroy them and everyone who helps them.

While the game initially feels reminiscent of titles like God of War, I’d actually describe the gameplay as a mix of God of War and Bayonetta. Asura’s Wrath is incredibly stylish, with fast-paced combat and impactful hits. Often, games like this let you feel too powerful too quickly, which can become boring. However, in this game by CyberConnect2, Asura steadily grows stronger, eventually becoming powerful enough to defeat even the main villain, Chakravartin. It really feels like no one can stand against Asura in this world.

5. Saints Row 4

You’re Truly The Boss

Let’s be clear: Saints Row 4 isn’t meant to be taken seriously. Similar to The Expendables films, it embraces over-the-top action and spectacle, but it pushes things even further. The Boss and the Saints, equipped with ridiculously powerful superpowers, are practically invincible. For me, playing it feels like Grand Theft Auto 5 with all the best mods activated – think flight, powerful shockwaves, and the feeling of being nearly unstoppable in a huge open world.

Man, it was really bad timing for the main character to become President just as the Zin were invading! It left them and the Saints stuck in these crazy, messed-up worlds built from their worst fears. But honestly, with everything going down – even the Earth getting blown up – it feels right for this series. I’m really looking forward to fighting back and taking down these enemies, it’s going to be awesome!

The game is a chaotic and exhilarating ride. You’ll soar through the air unleashing energy blasts, then find yourself in a seemingly normal car-based shootout. But this isn’t your typical action game – you can use telekinesis to hurl cars at enemies and wield Force-like powers that would impress Darth Vader! It’s over-the-top and humorous, but surprisingly allows for strategic character builds and genuinely powerful gameplay. I was constantly excited to discover new abilities, and one moment particularly stood out: when the main character expressed their own eagerness for more power, saying to a friend, “I still have another slot in my power menu, I want to fill it with something.”

4. Duke Nukem 3D

First-person shooters frequently center around a single, incredibly powerful hero. Duke Nukem definitely embodies that archetype, and I immediately expected Duke Nukem 3D to be a wildly empowering experience. This wasn’t just due to Duke’s established persona, but also because even the starting pistol felt strong and satisfying. Its rapid fire and punchy impact allowed you to quickly defeat enemies, and that fast-paced action continues throughout the entire game, no matter what weapon you’re using.

But when you’re fighting off aliens in places like Los Angeles and the Moon, you need some powerful weapons. My absolute favorite is the Freezethrower – there’s nothing quite as satisfying as completely freezing and shattering an enemy! Fortunately, these technologically advanced aliens often carry great gear that you can take for yourself. The Shrinker is another awesome weapon; it lets you instantly crush enemies up close.

Okay, so my character doesn’t have the crazy superpowers the main guy in Saints Row 4 does, but honestly, he’s still the most powerful. It’s all about confidence, you know? I single-handedly took down the alien invasion – not that I had any doubt I would, because I am the Duke, after all.

3. Warhammer 40,000: Darktide

Cleaving Through The Hordes

The world of Warhammer 40,000 is incredibly vast, bleak, and frightening. Naturally, it contains characters far more powerful than the player-created heroes in Darktide. These heroes began as prisoners facing certain death, but were spared when they rescued Explicator Orgustine Zola during an attack. It’s a humble start, but they’ll rise to become vital members of the Inquisition – becoming incredibly strong within the game and fighting through hordes of enemies to do so.

There’s a unique appeal to fighting large numbers of enemies in these games. A big part of it is how well it fits the grim, dark setting. It’s really enjoyable to try out different character builds, weapons, and skills to discover the most effective – and satisfying – way to defeat hordes of enemies, and it truly feels like a classic Warhammer experience. The franchise is known for portraying the harsh reality of large-scale battles in a bleak, dystopian world, and this gameplay captures that perfectly.

Be careful with large groups of enemies – acting recklessly can quickly get you overwhelmed and defeated. However, for most of the game on Tertium, you’ll feel powerful as you fight against Chaos, especially if you play with a team that strategically combines different character abilities.

2. Ryse: Son of Rome

A Historical Hack and Slash with Huge Style

I first played Crytek’s Ryse: Son of Rome when the Xbox One launched, and it’s remained my favorite game on the system ever since. It’s not necessarily the best game, but the combination of its Ancient Roman setting, impressive visuals, and intense combat has kept me returning to it for over ten years.

Players take on the role of General Titus in a campaign that follows his entire career, from fighting in Britannia to ultimately defending Rome itself. As the story unfolds, you’ll discover Emperor Nero’s connection to a tragedy in Titus’s past and learn the truth about the general, leading to a dramatic final confrontation. Fans of films like Gladiator will likely enjoy the narrative – it even shares a similar section – but the real strength of Ryse lies in its action. The game alternates between beautiful cinematic cutscenes and intense close-quarters combat against smaller groups of enemies, and it executes both exceptionally well. Visually, it was a standout title for its time, and it offers more than just impressive graphics; there’s a compelling story beneath the surface.

Honestly, what I love about this game is chaining together quick and powerful attacks, and then finishing enemies off with some really cool moves – keeping the combo going is key! It can be a little tricky to juggle multiple enemies at once, but when you do manage it, you feel totally unstoppable. The different levels are great too, letting you mess around with some awesome, over-the-top weapons from various eras. And while the bosses are strong, most of them don’t stand a chance against Marius – he’s just that powerful!

1. Prototype 2

How Much More Powerful Can You Be?

The original Prototype game was famous for letting players feel incredibly powerful. So, Radical Entertainment faced a challenge with the sequel: how to create a new hero that fans would love just as much. Would James Heller, the new protagonist, be able to match the abilities of the original hero, Dr. Alex Mercer? It turned out he’d actually surpass them.

Driven by a desire for revenge against Mercer, who caused the death of his family through dangerous experiments, Heller uncovers the truth behind the supposed cure, Whitelight. This leads to a massive showdown with Mercer and his organization. Initially, Heller is outmatched, but he eventually masters his own incredible abilities and defeats Mercer, growing into a powerful force in the process.

The combat is just as intense and rewarding as players remember from the first game, but it’s been expanded with new strategies and options. A standout addition is the Bio-Bomb, which not only obliterates enemies but also creates a large area-of-effect explosion. The game really pushes you to experiment with different abilities, and I especially loved the Hammerfists. They’re slow, but incredibly powerful, letting you break through tougher enemies and send them flying with massive shockwaves. It felt amazing – and a little bit ruthless!
