As a longtime Destiny 2 player, I was really bummed to hear Bungie announce the game is ending on June 9th. It feels so sudden! They’re releasing one last update, but it’s not going to include any new stories, expansions, or ongoing support – it’s truly the end of the road for new content. From what they’ve shared, this final update is surprisingly big for just a patch. They’ve posted a Dev Insight that gives us a peek at what’s coming, and honestly, it’s a dream update! They’re bringing back the Director, overhauling rewards at every location with unique events, and even Sparrow Racing League! It’s amazing, but bittersweet because it’s happening right as the game is ending. The community is pretty split on it all, which is understandable, but I’m trying to enjoy this last bit of Destiny 2 while I can.
Ever since Bungie announced it would stop supporting Destiny 2, many players online have blamed the new game Marathon for its downfall. This disagreement even led to a public argument between community figures Aztecross and Myelin Games about the future of Marathon and the possibility of a Destiny 3. The end of Destiny 2 is upsetting for longtime fans who have invested years in the game. However, some believe Marathon contributed to Destiny 2‘s problems and are calling for a boycott. This creates a difficult situation where both games from Bungie could ultimately fail instead of just one.
How The Destiny vs. Marathon Discourse Pitted Aztecross Against Myelin Games
Aztecross is a very popular content creator for Destiny 2, boasting over a million YouTube subscribers. Myelin Games has also been involved in building and documenting the game’s story over time. However, Aztecross recently announced in a video that he won’t support the game Marathon anymore, and he’d even prioritize Destiny 2 or a potential Destiny 3 over Marathon, even if it meant damaging Marathon‘s reputation.

Even if unintentional, his influential voice could significantly affect how people view Marathon. Myelin, who recently rediscovered his love for Marathon after years playing Destiny 2, likely took these comments as a personal attack on a game he enjoys.
After facing significant backlash, including negative reviews intended to harm its reputation, Marathon responded to claims it was damaging Destiny 2 by reframing the conversation. They suggested the criticism actually stemmed from a desire for more Marathon content, even if it meant less Destiny. Following this, Myelin Games made their Destiny lore videos on YouTube unavailable to the public.
The current conflict between the games Destiny and Marathon is happening at a difficult moment, but it’s understandable why. Many believe Marathon is responsible for the issues with Destiny 2, especially after reports that Bungie redirected around $200 million earned from Destiny 2 to fund Marathon‘s development, and that most of Bungie’s team was focused on Marathon instead. However, the core issue isn’t the games themselves, but rather problems with Bungie’s leadership and Sony’s reluctance to invest heavily in projects following their already troubled $3.6 billion purchase of Bungie.
Honestly, as a fan, it really bothers me to see people trying to start a “Destiny versus Marathon” war. It just doesn’t make any sense, and it could actually hurt both games! If Marathon ends up going down the same path as Destiny 2, we could see even more layoffs at Bungie, and then forget about ever getting a Destiny 3. It’s not helpful to pit these games against each other, especially after reading Paul Tassi’s report about plans for “Destiny Infinity” – ideas to keep Destiny 2 going that never even got the go-ahead. Let’s support both games instead of trying to tear them down!
