How to Beat Armand (Mina the Hollower)

In the first hour of playing Mina the Hollower, you’ll arrive in Ossex, the game’s central hub. After a conversation with Lionel that sets up the main story, you’ll be free to explore the city. Most players will probably head to Legovich’s Arms, the weapons shop, soon after.

In this area, you can buy the starting weapons from Mina the Hollower that you didn’t choose at the beginning, plus a couple of extra attacks and an upgrade for your daggers. But be warned: if you try to buy a second item, you’ll get an angry message, and going downstairs to find the sender will start a difficult boss battle.

How to Beat Armand in Mina the Hollower

When you first meet Armand, he might seem incredibly strong for where you are in the game – I even thought I’d accidentally started a boss battle! To make things worse, I lost a Spark in the basement and felt compelled to go back for it, even though I didn’t yet understand what Sparks actually did.

Armand is a tough opponent because he has a lot of health and deals significant damage if you’re not careful. However, I discovered that defeating him is surprisingly easy once you understand the right strategy. It just takes a little creativity – or, for me, a bit of good fortune!

In the back of the basement, you’ll find two lava sources that power the brothers’ furnaces. To defeat Armand, you need to dig underground and create a path from one of the lava pools, directing the lava to flow onto the basement floor. If Armand steps into the lava, he’ll start to glow orange and become much more vulnerable to damage.

You’ll still need to avoid Armand’s stomps and rock attacks by staying far away or digging underground, but it’s manageable if you play cautiously. If you have it, the Nightstar is a great weapon for this fight. It’s slower than Whisper and Vesper, but it helps you keep a safe distance from both Armand and the lava you’re trying to get him to fall into.

Once you defeat Armand, he’ll hand over the weapon you previously ordered and promise to craft more for you. You’ll need to pay 2,500 Bones for the next three weapons or upgrades – a bit more than the 2,000 Bones the brothers originally charged. However, since you’ll be collecting Bones frequently throughout Mina the Hollower, the 25% price increase shouldn’t be a major concern.
