In Mina the Hollower, you’ll regularly make choices that affect your gameplay. The first one happens fairly early on: when monsters attack the ship you’re on, you’ll find a chest with three weapons. Each weapon offers a different way to play the game, so choose the one that best suits your style.
Mina begins her adventure with three weapons: a pair of fast daggers, a long-reaching mace, and a powerful hammer. The hammer is especially useful, letting Mina deal a lot of damage to enemies close by and also perform a unique dodge roll.
Which Mina the Hollower Starting Weapon Should You Choose?
- Whisper and Vesper – A pair of nimble daggers. Tap [X] to stab in quick succession.
- Nightstar – A crushing mace, affixed to a flexible chain. Press [X] to strike from a distance.
- Blastrike Maul – A hammer with explosive force. Hold [X] to charge up. While charging, move to roll.
Okay, so picking your starting weapon in Mina the Hollower really comes down to how you like to play. If you’re good at timing your attacks and want a weapon that feels powerful, the Blastrike Maul is awesome. That charged attack is a lifesaver when you’re swarmed, and it makes combat feel more thoughtful. I personally love the Whisper and Vesper daggers – they’re super fast, and they work perfectly with the burrowing ability. Seriously, there’s nothing better than popping out of the ground behind an enemy, hitting them a bunch of times, and then disappearing before they can react! The Nightstar is a bit slower than the daggers, but the extra reach is really helpful, both for hitting enemies from a safe distance and for breaking those blocks that get in the way of reaching new areas.
Before returning to the ship, the game allows you to experiment with all three weapons and choose the best one. While the small number of enemy types makes it hard to fully test them, you can still get a feel for how each weapon functions.
How Long Before You Can Unlock the Other Two Starting Weapons?
Don’t worry if you pick the wrong starting weapon! You’ll be able to get the other two, plus two more ways to attack, within the first hour of playing. Once you reach Ossex, the main area of the Tenebrous Isle, you can buy the remaining weapons from Legovich’s Arms for 2,000 Bones each. The shop also sells a shield called the Guardian Casket, a cannon called the Battery Buster, and an upgrade for Whisper and Vesper called Lunging Cut. Keep in mind that your second purchase will trigger a challenging boss fight, so choose carefully!
