Old School RuneScape Shows Off a Packed Summer 2026 Roadmap

Jagex recently revealed a packed schedule of new content for Old School RuneScape during a livestream. This roadmap details a lot of exciting challenges coming to the game before the end of the year. The developers also announced that the final part of the Grandmaster quest will be released on June 30th, kicking off the summer season.

First released in 2004, RuneScape has a foundation built on older systems that have evolved over many years. The game has attracted over 300 million players globally and is known for letting the community vote on design changes. However, maintaining such an old online world creates significant technical difficulties, frequently requiring developers to fix complex issues to ensure the game runs smoothly. After a recent increase in the price of membership, players are keen to see how the developers will use the extra revenue to improve and modernize the game.

Ripping Open a Year of RuneScape Quests and Raids

This summer, the major event is ‘Blood Moon Rises,’ a challenging quest for experienced players that will finally wrap up the long-running Myreque story. For over ten years, players have followed this dark vampire saga in the world of Gielinor. Now, the powerful and ruthless Lord Drakan is returning, aiming to restore his clan’s violent past. Players will venture into the dangerous land of Vampyrium, facing a difficult environment with new ways to train skills and a challenging solo boss called the Maggot King.

Alongside the conclusion of the vampire storyline, players will soon be able to explore a brand-new island called Wyrmscraig. This rugged, mountainous territory was chosen by the community in a design competition and ties into the new Sailing skill. Wyrmscraig is full of dangerous creatures and offers a unique questline, a new Slayer Master named Mortimer, and a challenging boss fight called the Mad Angel. The island also introduces fresh ways to improve your skills, like hunting goats in pits and crafting golems. Later this year, the focus will shift to a chilling new adventure called The Graveyard, sending players into the dangerous Weissmere sea to continue the story of Olaf, a character with a 22-year history in the game.

The game is adding a challenging new raid called The Fractured Archive for experienced players – its first major endgame raid in over four years. Located within an ancient chasm tied to the god Guthix, this raid focuses on intense boss battles instead of complicated puzzles. Players will face eight bosses, including the returning Bork and the Guthixian Archive Guardian, for a chance to win the best gear in the game. Beyond the raid, updates include a team bingo tracker, a safe tutorial for player-versus-player combat, and new servers in Singapore, Japan, and South Africa to improve connection speeds. The game client is also getting improvements like picture-in-picture for Android, easier bank tagging on mobile, and a visual upgrade. Finally, the year will feature real-world events like the Deadman Allstars tournament in Chicago and a 25th-anniversary party at RuneFest in 2026.

The recent surge of new content has players thrilled, but it’s also causing serious technical problems for the game. The developers are quickly running out of unique codes needed for each new item and scenery piece, with numbers already exceeding 60,000. A developer jokingly acknowledged on Reddit that they’re close to hitting a limit, and if they do, the game could become unstable. This isn’t the first time this has happened; a similar issue caused a scramble back in 2018 before an update. Until the programming team fundamentally updates the game’s core code, these limitations will continue to be a challenge as they plan ambitious future projects like RuneScape: Dragonwilds.
