4 Must-Play GOT Games To Get You Ready For HOTD Season 3

With the third season of House of the Dragon coming out on June 21st, it’s a perfect time to explore the video games set in the world of Westeros and get excited for the new season on HBO. While there haven’t been any truly great official Game of Thrones games yet, the world created by George R.R. Martin feels perfectly suited for video games, and some developers have made projects that are still worth playing for fans of A Song of Ice & Fire.

2025 saw the launch of Game of Thrones: Kingsroad, the most ambitious game in the Game of Thrones series so far. Because it’s free to play, it’s likely to be the first choice for anyone wanting to explore the world of Westeros, and it looks great! It’s worth checking out, but I’d also recommend trying some smaller, more unique games if you find one that matches your preferred genre.

Crusader Kings 3: A Game of Thrones Mod

The Best Westeros Political Sim (And The Best GOT Game)

Let’s start with a truly impressive mod: a complete overhaul of a complex strategy game – and it’s even more challenging than the base game! Without a doubt, the ‘A Game of Thrones Mod’ for Crusader Kings 3 is the best Game of Thrones experience out there, and it’s not even close. The core game’s mix of large-scale strategy and character-driven role-playing works perfectly with the world of A Song of Ice and Fire – it’s a fantastic combination. This mod expertly adjusts existing game features and adds new ones to accurately reflect the history, myths, and political system of Westeros.

This mod begins with the events of the Dance of the Dragons, putting Rhaenyra and Aegon II at the forefront. But you’re not limited to playing as them – you can choose from many different characters, or even create your own illegitimate heir and reshape Westeros to your liking.

It helps to have some experience with the original game before diving into this mod, particularly if you’re new to modding. But don’t worry if you’re a complete beginner – many people bought CK3 just to play this mod! Because of the significant changes, it might actually be easier to start fresh rather than trying to change how you usually play. Still, we recommend completing the CK3 tutorial to learn the basics. And when you start, it’s best to choose a smaller realm instead of immediately trying to rule as the King on the Iron Throne.

Special Mention: Game of Thrones: A Telltale Games Series

If You Can Get It, This Game Is An Enjoyable GOT Side Quest

While the AGOT mod is incredible, its complexity can be daunting. So, let’s focus on something easier to pick up and play – something with simpler gameplay.

You can’t buy Game of Thrones: A Telltale Games Series digitally anymore. If you’re interested in playing it, you’ll need to find a physical copy or check if you already own it on Steam—many players, like myself, acquired it through a bundle and might have forgotten! It doesn’t look like Telltale will revisit the world of Westeros anytime soon.

If you can get your hands on this game, you’ll find it captures what fans love about the source material: gripping conversations, a sense of political unease, and characters you grow to care about facing deadly consequences. Gameplay centers around making quick decisions during conversations. You might be facing off against someone like Cersei Lannister or Ramsay Bolton, trying to reach an agreement with a ticking clock. Do you risk offending them to save face, or swallow your pride and beg for mercy, potentially losing respect from your allies?

Like Rhaenyra and Alicent in House of the Dragon, players in this game face difficult political challenges where a single mistake could lead to conflict. Instead of simply recreating the show or books, the game focuses on a new house pledged to the Starks, with the Forrester family at the heart of the story.

A Game of Thrones: The Board Game – Digital Edition

A Masterpiece Tabletop Game Turned Into A Respectable Digital Game

If you and your friends love military strategy and outsmarting each other, A Game of Thrones: The Board Game – Digital Edition is for you. This digital version of the popular tabletop game, created by Dire Wolf, keeps the challenging gameplay of the original while making it easier to learn for new players.

The main part of the game happens in rounds. Each player secretly chooses an action – March, Defend, Support, Raid, or Consolidate Power – and places a token representing that action face down on the map. Everyone reveals their choices at the same time, creating a bit of suspense! Winning isn’t about luck; it’s about having more units, smart positioning, and playing the right cards.

I’d mainly suggest this game for playing with friends, though there’s also enough single-player stuff to keep you entertained for a bit.

Reigns: Game of Thrones

Swipe Yes, Swipe No

The earlier games are great, but they take a lot of time and effort to play or even find, which is fine if you’re trying to pass the time until the new season of HOTD. However, we want to suggest something easier to pick up, and Reigns: Game of Thrones is perfect. It’s a quick, simple game you can even play with one hand. Surprisingly, it still manages to capture the dangerous and competitive spirit of Westeros really well.

At its core, Reigns: Game of Thrones is like Tinder, but set in the world of Westeros. The game presents events as visions from Melisandre, and you play through the stories of various characters vying for control of the Iron Throne. As ruler, you’ll receive requests and make choices by swiping left to decline or right to accept. These decisions affect your kingdom’s resources. Though the gameplay is simple, it’s surprisingly engaging.
