As a huge Dragon Ball fan, I’m always amazed by Piccolo! He started as Goku’s rival and became Gohan’s incredible teacher, and he’s easily one of the strongest characters ever created in the series. Sure, the Saiyans eventually got stronger in a lot of different versions of the story, but Piccolo has some seriously powerful forms across the multiverse. Especially now with Orange Piccolo in Dragon Ball Super – he’s reached a whole new God-level power that’s just mind-blowing!
Piccolo consistently trains to improve and stay competitive with the Saiyans, no matter the situation. While he doesn’t reach the same overwhelming power levels as characters like Goku or Vegeta, he’s still incredibly strong. The most powerful versions of Piccolo across different universes can fight alongside top-tier Dragon Ball characters – a feat beyond the reach of most fighters.
8. Demon King Piccolo Only Had a Power Level of 260
Dragon Ball
Demon King Piccolo is the original form of Piccolo, and also his father. After Kid Goku defeated him at the end of the Piccolo Daimao Saga, he was reborn as Piccolo Jr. Official materials state that Demon King Piccolo’s power level was 260 when he died, making him equally strong as Goku after Goku drank the Ultra Divine Water.
Compared to the original Namekian he came from, Demon King Piccolo isn’t very powerful. However, when he first appeared in Dragon Ball, he was by far the most formidable enemy Goku had ever fought. Piccolo seriously injured Goku, stopping his heart, and was responsible for the deaths of Chiaotzu, Shenron, and Master Roshi.
7. Kami Could Have Defeated King Piccolo Himself
Dragon Ball & Dragon Ball Z
Kami is the benevolent side of Piccolo and a powerful deity who watches over Earth. When young Goku first encounters Kami, Kami easily sends him flying and reveals he could have defeated King Piccolo, but wouldn’t fight someone so evil. Kami then trains Goku with Mr. Popo in preparation for the 23rd World Martial Arts Tournament, where he participates disguised as “Shen.”
When Kami first appeared in the original Dragon Ball, he was a strong fighter, but Goku and Piccolo Jr. quickly surpassed him. By the 23rd World Martial Arts Tournament, Kami was only stronger than ordinary humans and couldn’t defeat Piccolo. By the time the Saiyan Saga began, Kami was significantly weaker than all of Earth’s top warriors.
6. The Nameless Namekian Was Piccolo’s Powerful Original Form
Dragon Ball Manga & Dragon Ball Z
I remember learning about Piccolo’s history and discovering his original form, the Nameless Namekian. He was incredibly powerful, one of the strongest Namekians ever. Apparently, to become the guardian of Earth, known as Kami, he had to get rid of all the darkness within himself. Unfortunately, that darkness didn’t just disappear; it became the evil Demon King Piccolo. People like Nail and Guru always believed the Nameless Namekian was unbelievably strong – Nail thought he could have even beaten Frieza, and Guru claimed he was a once-in-a-generation talent, stronger than any Saiyan warrior.
The story supports the idea that if Piccolo and Kami had remained one being, the resulting Super Namekian would have been incredibly powerful – strong enough to challenge even Android 17. This fused Namekian could have easily defeated all the Saiyans and Frieza’s soldiers early in Dragon Ball Z without much difficulty. In fact, only the Androids would have posed a serious threat to him.
5. DAIMA Piccolo is Stuck at His Buu Saga Power Level
Dragon Ball DAIMA
If Dragon Ball Super: Beerus doesn’t officially include Super Saiyan 4 Goku and Super Saiyan 3 Vegeta, then Dragon Ball DAIMA takes place in a separate timeline from Dragon Ball Super. Dragon Ball DAIMA begins one year after the defeat of Majin Buu. After the Demon King Gomah turns Goku and his friends into children, they journey to the Demon Realm to find three Demon Dragon Balls and restore their adult forms.
Piccolo accompanies Vegeta and Bulma on their trip to the Demon Realm. While shrunk down, he’s not as powerful as he was at the end of Dragon Ball Z. Once he returns to his normal size, Piccolo can contribute in important battles, but he’s still significantly weaker than Goku and Vegeta at their peak. His strength as DAIMA Piccolo is roughly comparable to what he demonstrated at the end of the Dragon Ball Z anime and manga, maybe a little bit stronger.
4. Majin Piccolo is Far Stronger Than Piccolo at the End of Z
Supersonic Warriors 2, Tenkaichi Tag Team, and Shin Budokai – Another Road –
I’m a huge fan of the ‘What If’ scenarios in the Dragon Ball universe, and Majin Piccolo is one of the coolest! Basically, instead of Vegeta, the evil energy from Babidi latches onto the darkness within Piccolo, turning him into the Majin warrior. It’s wild because, even at his base level, Majin Piccolo is strong enough to go toe-to-toe with Super Saiyan 2 Goku – the same kind of power-up Majin Vegeta gets in the main story!
When at his peak, Majin Piccolo is incredibly strong – able to defeat Super Buu, which puts him at a similar power level as Super Saiyan 3 Goku. He appears in several Dragon Ball video games, including Supersonic Warriors 2, Tenkaichi Tag Team, and Shin Budokai – Another Road. Becoming Majin transforms Piccolo into a Demon Man, stripping away his good side and preventing the souls of those he defeats from reaching the afterlife.
3. Namekian in Black Comes From a Timeline Where Only Piccolo Survived the Fight With Frieza
Super Dragon Ball Heroes
The Namekian in Black is a powerful warrior from the world of Super Dragon Ball Heroes. He’s a version of Piccolo from a timeline where Goku wasn’t able to beat Frieza on Planet Namek. In this timeline, Gohan, Krillin, and Goku all died fighting Frieza, leaving Piccolo as the only one left. He also fused with Nail, but seems to be even stronger than the Piccolo fans know from Dragon Ball Z, as he actually fought alongside Goku against Frieza.
Piccolo, despite his defeat by Frieza, remarkably survives and joins the Warriors of Black, becoming the Namekian in Black. This new version of Piccolo is incredibly strong – powerful enough to fight alongside both Piccolo and Super Saiyan Gohan from Dragon Ball Super, far exceeding his abilities in the original DBZ series. The Namekian in Black also played a key role in defeating Gravy, a highly skilled and dangerous wizard from the Dark Demon Realm.
2. GT Piccolo is Stronger Than Every Single Villain in DBZ & Early GT
Dragon Ball GT
The power levels in Dragon Ball GT are really inconsistent. Goku becomes incredibly strong, which is strange considering he’s mostly a child throughout the series. Piccolo doesn’t train much in DBGT and sadly dies during the Baby Saga, but he’s secretly much more powerful than he appears. After his death, Piccolo ends up in Hell, where he takes on the role of overseeing and guarding the underworld, keeping former villains under control.
According to the anime version of the Dragon Ball story created by Toei Animation, when characters die, their bodies remain intact. The afterlife, or Hell, is populated by the show’s most powerful enemies, like Frieza, Super Perfect Cell, Rildo, and Hell Fighter 17. This means Piccolo needs to be stronger than all of these villains to fit into the storyline. Since both Rildo and Hell Fighter 17 are more powerful than the final form of Majin Buu from the original Dragon Ball Z series, Piccolo in Dragon Ball GT is shown as being stronger than almost every villain seen up to that point in the story.
1. Canon Piccolo is as Strong as Ultra Instinct Goku & Ultra Ego Vegeta
Dragon Ball & Dragon Ball Super Manga
Piccolo is unique among Dragon Ball characters because his most powerful form originates from the main storyline. With the events of Dragon Ball Super: Super Hero, Piccolo has reached his highest power level ever, even surpassing versions from alternate universes. Shenron not only maximized Piccolo’s potential but also gave him an extra boost, making him as strong as the most powerful god-like characters in Dragon Ball. According to Akira Toriyama, Piccolo’s Orange form is a transformation that can compete with Goku’s Perfected Ultra Instinct.
Toyotarou, the artist and writer of the Dragon Ball Super manga, has reinforced this concept by placing Orange Piccolo at a power level comparable to characters like PUI Goku, Ultra Ego Vegeta, Beast Gohan, and Legendary Super Saiyan Broly. This makes Piccolo one of the few characters capable of challenging Black Frieza. At his peak, Orange Piccolo is powerful enough to defeat any other version of himself across the entire multiverse, with no one even coming close to matching his strength.
