The new mobile game, Roco Kingdom: World, is quickly gaining popularity and hoping to challenge established franchises like Pokemon. Players can explore a large world and collect over 400 different creatures.
I’ve played a lot of monster-catching games over the years, but honestly, Pokemon is still king. It basically created the genre with Red and Blue, and it’s been huge ever since – like, one of the biggest entertainment franchises ever. You can see its influence everywhere; tons of developers, from small indie teams to the big guys, have tried to make their own Pokemonlike games – think Dragon Quest Monsters or even newer titles like Temtem. But now, there’s a new contender coming from Morefun Games and Tencent that’s looking to take on Pokemon*’s crown.
Roco Kingdom: World Is a New Monster-Catching MMORPG
Roco Kingdom: World is quickly becoming a major rival to Pokemon. This monster-catching game blends familiar team-building and turn-based combat with a vast, open world for players to discover. Inspired by popular mobile games like Genshin Impact, Roco Kingdom emphasizes exploration, sending players to investigate places like abandoned train stations, mountains, and magical locations. Remarkably, the game keeps microtransactions to a minimum, offering all 400 Rocos through gameplay and limiting purchases to cosmetic items. Currently, Roco Kingdom: World is only available in China, and a worldwide release date hasn’t been announced.

I’ve been checking out Roco Kingdom: World, and it’s a seriously social game. It’s an MMORPG, so teaming up with other players is a huge part of it – we’re talking exploring a massive world, taking on tough bosses, and running dungeons together. Plus, you can even ride around on these cool creatures called Rocos and fly! It launched fully in China a few months ago, and it’s already blown up – over 13 million people have jumped in to play, which is pretty awesome.
Several companies are now trying to compete with the popular Pokemon franchise, and Morefun and Tencent are the latest to enter the arena. In 2025, HoYoverse, the creators of Genshin Impact, announced Honkai: Nexus Anima, a new monster-catching game that will include characters from their other titles, Honkai Impact 3rd and Honkai: Star Rail. Palworld, released in 2020, quickly became a major competitor, attracting over 32 million players with its unique blend of monster-catching and survival gameplay.

The world of monster-catching games is getting more competitive, and the Pokemon franchise is preparing for its next big step forward. The Pokemon Company announced Pokemon Winds and Waves in February 2026, marking the tenth generation of core Pokemon games. Along with the announcement, fans got a first look at the three starter Pokemon: Growt (Grass-type), Pombon (Fire-type), and Gecqua (Water-type). The monster-catching genre has become increasingly popular, with many new games trying to achieve the same level of success as Pokemon.
