This article reveals key plot points from the climactic “Final Saga” of the popular series, “My Hero Academia.” Proceed with caution if you wish to avoid spoilers.

In the series titled “My Hero Academia”, one thing that stands out is that appearances can often be misleading. The Todoroki family serves as an excellent illustration of this concept. Specifically, Shoto Todoroki’s storyline within the show primarily revolves around him confronting and healing from the wounds inflicted upon him by his father.

Witnessing the life of Enji Todoroki, or Endeavor as he’s known, I can’t help but feel empathy for his offspring. Being the son of a legendary hero like Number 2 might seem daunting, yet Endeavor himself has made their lives more complicated than necessary, cultivating an incredibly dysfunctional family environment.

The Family Of Hero Number 2

The Todoroki household consists of Enji Todoroki, also recognized as Endeavor the Fire Hero, his spouse Rei Todoriki (formerly Rei Himura), as well as their kids: Toya Todoriki, more commonly known as Dabi, Fuyumi Todoriki, Natsuo Todoriki, and Shoto Todoriki.

Name Age At First Appearance
Toya Todoroki 23 years old
Fuyumi Todoroki 22 years old
Natsuo Todoroki 19 years old
Shoto Todoroki 16 years old

Though often perceived as a contented family due to their crime-solving prowess, led by the Hero, in reality, they are deeply dysfunctional, primarily because of Endeavor’s personal struggles.

A Quirk-Arranged Marriage in Search of the “Perfect Child”

Initially, Endeavor’s union with Rei was prearranged. This was a case of what is known as a “Quirk marriage,” a tradition that came about following the emergence of Quirks. Similar to traditional arranged marriages focusing on status, Quirk marriages primarily concern enhancing Quirks because they have a genetic basis that can be passed down. The objective is often to blend two Quirks together and thereby produce children with enhanced powers, which is essentially a new take on eugenics.

Endeavor aimed to create a child who possessed the combined elemental powers of fire (his own) and ice (Rei’s), so this child could be trained to exceed All Might as the Number 1 hero. After some time, that dream materialized in the form of Shoto.

The Children of An Obsessive Hero

Apart from Toya, who has the Blueflame Quirk (fire ability), and Shoto, who possesses the Half-Cold Half-Hot Quirk, the other two siblings were born with Frost Quirks.

Initially, Endeavor considered Toya as his potential successor due to his seniority and fire-based superpower. Yet, his harsh treatment towards his offspring and the grueling training regimen he imposed turned his children against him.

Instead of just the children, Rei found it necessary to step in and prevent Endeavor from pushing them too hard. Unfortunately, her efforts didn’t go unnoticed by Endeavor, who took his anger out on her as well. Over time, the constant stress and abuse led to a mental breakdown for Rei, ultimately resulting in an accident that severely scarred Shoto’s face.

Endeavor decided against naming Toya as his successor when he learned that Toya lacked fire resistance, despite having the ability to manipulate fire. This revelation only fueled Toya’s anger, and it worsened further upon Shoto’s birth, as Endeavor favored his other children less and neglected them. Consequently, Toya eventually turned into a villain, seeking revenge for these perceived injustices.

As the narrative unfolds, Endeavor eventually comes to understand the implications of his actions, feeling remorse for the lengths he went to achieve his goals and the way he mistreated his family, particularly Toya, Shoto, and Rei, who appear to have been most affected by his choices.

A while after the Final Saga, Shoto has risen to Hero Number 2, unlike his father, he appears unfazed about reaching the peak position.

A “Fallen Hero” Regretting Past Mistakes

Sadly, Toya meets his end in the story’s conclusion. Despite all that transpires, Natsuo maintains a deep-seated hatred for their father, while Shoto holds a complex view of him – he assumes control over his office nonetheless. Contrary to his brothers, Fuyumi enjoys a relatively better bond with him; however, she acknowledges moments when she feels as they do, admitting that Endeavor was not an ideal parent.

Regardless of the circumstances, Rei remained steadfast by Endeavor’s side, tending to his wounds even after their battle left him incapable of walking. Endeavor harbors a desire to atone for his past actions, yet he acknowledges that his family may never fully forgive him.

My Hero Academia is available to stream on Crunchyroll, subbed and dubbed in many languages.
