scarcely have TV series garnered the popularity and international acclaim that Game of Thrones enjoyed at its height, captivating viewers with its gripping narrative and skillfully woven storylines filled with unexpected twists. Throughout its remarkable 10-year reign over television, many attributed the show’s success to the intricate fantasy world created by George R.R. Martin, which boasted a diverse cast of engaging and well-developed characters populating a world teeming with dragons, the undead, magic, and nobility.

While Jon Snow, Tyrion Lannister, and Daenerys Targaryen were the main figures, Game of Thrones was known for its lesser-known characters who played significant roles in the story, sometimes overshadowed by the dramatic twists and groundbreaking events that made the show a television phenomenon. Characters with limited screen time significantly enriched the narratives in Westeros and Essos, although they are often overlooked by viewers.

9. Jory Cassel

Ned Stark’s Right-Hand Man

  • Debut: Winter Is Coming, Season 1, Episode 1
  • Played By: Jamie Sieves

As a die-hard Game of Thrones fan, I often find myself reflecting on the lesser-known characters who significantly contributed to the series’ rich tapestry. One such character is Jory Cassel, the steadfast companion and right-hand man to Lord Ned Stark, the revered ruler of Winterfell. Although Ned’s abrupt departure from our screens left a lasting impact on viewers worldwide, many seem to overlook the crucial role that Jory played in the storyline.

As the nephew of the formidable Ser Rodrik Cassel, Jory served as the captain of Ned’s personal guard, entrusted with a myriad of responsibilities within Winterfell. When Ned was called to King’s Landing to serve as Robert Baratheon’s Hand of the King, Jory accompanied him, finding himself embroiled in political intrigue, safeguarding Arya and Sansa Stark, and defending Ned with unwavering loyalty.

Despite his unwavering loyalty, Jory finds himself entangled in the escalating conflict between the Starks and Lannisters. Ultimately, it’s Jaime Lannister, the skilled swordsman, who ends Jory’s life in a brutal manner, plunging his sword straight through Jory’s eye, rendering Ned exposed and vulnerable in the capital.

8. Pyp

One Of Jon Snow’s Loyal Friends In The Night’s Watch

  • Debut: Lord Snow, Season 1, Episode 3
  • Played By: Josef Altin

In the chaotic hierarchy of the Night’s Watch, Jon Snow amassed several adversaries. Despite being bullied for his noble lineage, the bastard born of Winterfell eventually found a tight-knit circle of allies. Among them was Pyp, a steward, who, along with Grenn, initially picked on Jon. However, this dynamic changed when Pyp, Jon, Grenn, Samwell Tarly, and Dolorous Edd forged a robust friendship based on trust and camaraderie.

Despite his aversion to war and violence, Pyp met an unfortunate end in the clash between the Night’s Watch and the Wildlings. It was Ygritte, Jon Snow’s lover, who dealt the fatal blow to one of Castle Black’s most underappreciated members.

7. Lady Crane

Stage Performer Who Aids Arya Stark

  • Debut: The Door, Season 6, Episode 5
  • Played By: Essie Davis

As a dedicated movie enthusiast, I found myself entangled in the challenging role of a Faceless Man in the intricate city of Braavos. One of my most challenging assignments was to cross paths with Lady Crane, an exceptional actress gracing the stage. Portraying a detested character like Cersei Lannister, she was someone I was supposed to eliminate as part of my training. However, instead of administering poison, my heart softened towards her kindness and powerful performances, leading me to protect her. This selfless act put both Lady Crane and myself in the crosshairs of the Waif’s wrath.

Following an unexpected attack by her adversary, Arya hastens to Crane for protection. The multi-talented healer demonstrates her mendicant abilities, preventing Arya from succumbing to her wounds before she bleeds profusely. Despite her selfless actions and nurturing disposition, which resonated with Arya, the disguised Waif ruthlessly slays Crane, one of the few kind-hearted characters that make an impact in Game of Thrones, albeit her demise being swiftly overshadowed.

6. Pyat Pree

Ominous Warlock Who Traps Daenerys

  • Debut: Garden of Bones, Season 2, Episode 4
  • Played By: Ian Hanmore

As a devoted fan, I can’t help but reflect on the formidable adversaries that challenged Daenerys Targaryen throughout “Game of Thrones.” Among these, one who truly posed a significant threat was Pyat Pree, a warlock dwelling in the enigmatic city of Qarth. As part of the powerful council known as the Thirteen, Pree instantly took notice of Daenerys, demonstrating his magical prowess to captivate the coveted Khaleesi. In his quest for dominance, the elusive Pree formed an alliance with Xaro Xhoan Daxos, ousting fellow members from the Thirteen and eventually taking Daenerys prisoner within the House of the Undying, where her dragons were concealed.

As a film enthusiast, I must say that even though Pree held a significant role, his intimidating persona and magical prowess couldn’t keep Daenerys at bay. With her young dragons breathing fire, they reduced elusive Pree to ashes in a powerful display of might by the Dragon Queen herself.

5. Dagmer

A Back-Stabbing Ironborn Bandit

  • Debut: The Ghost of Harrenhal, Season 2, Episode 5
  • Played By: Ralph Ineson

Ralph Ineson has experienced a significant rise in fame over the past few years, landing roles in films such as Robert Eggers’ acclaimed horror movie “The Witch” and “Nosferatu”, and he will soon appear as Galactus in “The Fantastic Four: First Steps”. Nowadays, Ineson is highly sought-after. Yet, some may forget that he played the Ironborn raider Dagmer, who joins Theon Greyjoy during his raid and occupation of Winterfell. As Theon’s second-in-command, Dagmer’s expertise and influence on Theon lead to the Greyjoy heir committing numerous cruel acts under his watch, including the murder of Sir Rodrik after capturing Winterfell. Dagmer encourages and even assists in these actions.

Dagmer’s rough personality and behavior quickly influenced Theon. Yet, when Ramsay Bolton arrived at Winterfell, rather than engaging in a battle, Dagmer and his Ironborn comrades chose to flee, abducting Theon and brutally killing Maester Luwin along the way. Regrettably for Dagmer and his group, their cowardly actions led to their deaths at Ramsay’s hands. Later, Yara Greyjoy learned of their gruesome demise, which ultimately resulted in a violent retribution for Dagmer.

4. Mirri Maz Duur

Evil Witch Who Brought Ruin To Daenerys

  • Debut: The Pointy End, Season 1, Episode 8
  • Played By: Mia Soteriou

In Season 1, we were introduced to Mirri Maz Duur, a mystical healer, in the Dothraki storyline. Instead of being mistreated by the Dothraki, she becomes Daenerys’ guest, or ally. Following Khal Drogo’s triumph over a dissenting Dothraki warrior, who resented Daenerys saving Maz Duur, he suffered a grave injury. In an attempt to heal Drogo, Mirri Maz Duur’s methods were somewhat enigmatic, resulting in the warlord falling into paralysis. Furthermore, Daenerys’ pregnancy, under Mirri Maz Duur’s care, ended tragically with a stillborn child.

Maz Duur’s magical curses on Daenerys’ spouse and offspring brought immense sorrow and torment to the Khaleesi, leading eventually to the wicked sorceress being consumed by flames, her cries of agony echoing as Daenerys exacted her vengeance.

3. Illyrio Mopatis

Wealthy Magister Who Remains A Targaryen Loyalist

  • Debut: Winter Is Coming, Season 1, Episode 1
  • Played By: Roger Allam

In the epic series Game of Thrones, numerous characters not belonging to the noble bloodline played significant roles in the complex political maneuverings that made it so popular. One such character is Illyrio Mopatis, who emerged early as a powerful figure captivated by the politics of Westeros. He first appeared as the wedding broker between bride-to-be Daenerys and Khal Drogo, the leader of the Dothraki. However, it was revealed that Illyrio harbored a keen interest in supporting the Targaryens, particularly Viserys Targaryen, who was Daenerys’ dominant older brother.

Ilyrio’s impact on the series might seem understated, but his cunning machinations were instrumental. He provided Daenerys with dragon eggs, which eventually aided her in dominating Essos, a key plot point of the show. Additionally, Ilyrio formed an alliance with Lord Varys and introduced Ser Jorah Mormont to the circle of Viserys and Daenerys. Over time, this man became one of Daenerys’ most steadfast supporters as she pursued her goal of reclaiming her father’s throne.

2. Xaro Xhoan Daxos

Qarth High Roller Keen On The Mother Of Dragons

  • Debut: Garden of Bones, Season 2, Episode 4
  • Played By: Nonso Anozie

In the beginning, Daenerys Targaryen’s time with her newborn dragons wasn’t a walk in the park. Struggles were faced by her companions and caravan across the barren lands of Essos. Later, Xaro, one of the Thirteen, intervened, aiding Daenerys to find shelter in Qarth. Although the events that unfolded in Qarth might seem less impactful compared to other significant moments in Daenerys’ life, they were indeed crucial.

Season 2 introduced us to Xaro, who appeared to be a benevolent and generous individual at first glance. However, beneath his pleasant demeanor, Xaro, the merchant prince, was after wealth and power through a possible alliance with the Dragon Queen.

Regardless of Xaro and Pree’s persistent attempts, their scheme to seize control over Qarth and challenge Daenerys ultimately failed. This was due in large part to Daenerys’ unwavering determination (and her formidable dragons), which led to the removal from the world of deceitful and power-hungry figures like Xaro.

1. Ros

Brothel Worker Who Goes From Winterfell To King’s Landing

  • Debut: Winter Is Coming, Season 1, Episode 1
  • Played By: Esme Bianco

Initially appearing in the very first episode of “Game of Thrones”, the character named Ros was a highly skilled and popular prostitute, particularly among Theon and others in and around Winterfell, known for her irresistible charm and engaging conversations. Throughout the first four seasons, Ros occasionally resurfaced, eventually shifting to King’s Landing where she worked in Petyr Baelish’s brothel, doubling as an informant. During this time, she honed her skills under Littlefinger and formed intimate relationships with influential political figures like Grand Maester Pycelle. However, harrowing encounters with characters such as Littlefinger and Cersei led Ros to switch allegiances, joining Varys, a eunuch who had sworn to protect those in his service.

Unluckily for Ros, Littlefinger uncovers her alliance with Varys and as a result, he hands her over to the cruelest inhabitant of King’s Landing, King Joffrey Baratheon. In a heartless act, Joffrey takes her life using his reliable crossbow.
