While fans of the spin-off series, World Beyond, were eventually enlightened that the virus emerged from a biomedical facility in France following an accidental experiment, on AMC’s The Walking Dead, the zombie outbreak served primarily as a backdrop for its deeply character-focused narrative.

In the early stages of the television series, Walkers were an overpowering menace that instilled fear in both the show’s characters and viewers alike, as they battled to stay alive in a ruthless and unfavorable world. The reveal that even if Rick and his companions managed to evade becoming a cannibalistic corpse, they could still carry the virus through airborne particles without showing symptoms was particularly chilling. Some viewers might argue that some of the most compelling storylines emerged early on in each season, as “The Walking Dead” delved into fleshing out its intricate characters and showcasing the lengths the group would go to survive in a post-apocalyptic setting, primarily due to the looming presence of the walkers. However, as the series progressed, this dread seemed to diminish. The comic book name for the virus now provides a more accurate depiction of the horrifying disease.

The Walking Dead’s Virus Being Called “The Walking Death” Is a Lot More Credible

In the thrilling world of cinema and comic book adaptations, as a passionate fan myself, I recently stumbled upon an intriguing revelation in The Walking Dead Deluxe #109’s supplementary tale titled Small Bites. Penned by Derek Hunter, this captivating storyline sheds light on Ezekiel’s tiger, Shiva, who was saved from her concrete moat before the apocalypse while working as a zookeeper.

In the latest comics of The Walking Dead, Shiva discloses that the virus is known as ‘The Walking Death’. This raises questions among fans about why this name wasn’t used in the TV show, as it accurately depicts the devastating effects of the infection. In the series, the virus was referred to as the Wildfire Virus, possibly because of its rapid global spread. However, using a less ominous term like Wildfire seems to diminish its frightening impact. It’s puzzling why they didn’t adopt the same name or something even more alarming given the virus’s significant role in the show.

More recently, it was disclosed by Robert Kirkman, co-creator of “The Walking Dead”, that he initially contemplated omitting the faithful cat from his comic book series due to its perceived oddity. However, he intentionally made Ezekiel’s tiger pet, Shiva, more challenging to adapt for the TV screen. Regrettably, Shiva suffered a brutal demise in both the comics and the series, adding another emotional scar to fans’ collective memories, all thanks to Kirkman.
