The Wheel of Time Season 3: Two Rivers get ready for war

In the heart of the penultimate episode, titled “Goldeneyes,” I find myself bracing for war alongside the resilient folk of Two Rivers. We’ve foreseen the impending attack of the Trollocs and are determined to stand our ground. Lucky for us, we have Perrin, Alanna, Maksim, Loial, Bain, Chiad, and Faile leading us, teaching us the finer points of combat. I’m busy helping our young men craft swords, ensuring that every man, woman, and child of Two Rivers can defend themselves against the Trolloc horde.

However, the tension escalates when a resident shouts about an incoming army. We barricade ourselves, but as I peer through the gates, I realize it’s not an army outside. To my surprise, these are refugees from places that have fallen prey to the Trollocs’ wrath. I open the gates and meet an acquaintance, Aram. As we converse, I learn that these people aren’t just from one tribe or location; they hail from various places that have been ravaged by the wicked Trollocs.

Meanwhile, Maksim is instructing both men and women on how to use their weapons for combat, while Alanna assists two eager young channelers in honing their abilities. However, these youths are more captivated by the flashy aspects of power, such as summoning bolts of lightning. During this exchange, Alanna notices an older woman observing her instruct the children on harnessing their powers. It appears that she too is a channeler, but she seems uninterested in joining them. Shortly thereafter, Perrin and Faile encounter the leader of the White Cloaks and request their aid against the Trollocs. Yet, helping Perrin posed a challenge due to his past actions against the leader’s father. As the conversation unfolds, Perrin offers that if they lend assistance in this battle, he will face judgment from the light. However, it seems that the White Cloaks are unwilling to aid them.

The Wheel of Time Season 3: Perrin is scared for his people, while Loial goes to destroy the waygate

Perrin and Faile discuss their upcoming battle. Faile admits she’s scared of death, just like her father was afraid of battles and dying. Perrin confesses that he’s not afraid of death itself, but of the regret he’d feel if he led others to their demise. If they die with disappointment on their faces because he failed them. Faile reassures him that things could have been much worse for them without his presence in the fight.

Perrin wonders why Faile is here fighting, as she hails from Two Rivers. Faile explains that she enjoys lost causes and wanted to be part of this battle. When Perrin suggests she leave to avoid dying, Faile insists she’ll only depart if he kills her himself.

Instead of Perrin informing Mat’s gifted sisters about his actions, a scene unfolds revealing the depth of sibling bonds. Initially, they mock the photo of Mat with the horn, but their laughter subsides as they spot an approaching Trolloc army in the distant mountains. Uniting in strategy, they ponder their next move, fearing potential escalation through the waygate. Loial proposes to close the gate from afar to halt further Trolloc invasion. Perrin wishes to accompany him, but Loial denies him due to fears of causing panic among the people. Instead, Bain and Chiad will go with Loial. Reluctantly, Perrin concurs and urges Loial to return home after closing the gate, sharing their experiences and lessons learned from this battle.

The Wheel of Time Season 3: [Spoiler’s] sacrifice helps Two Rivers win the battle

A short while passes, and Perrin along with the folk of Two Rivers prepare for the imminent fight. With fervor, he leads a song to rally everyone for the upcoming battle. The time had arrived; the Trolloc army was at the gates of Two Rivers, marking the start of the long-awaited confrontation. The archers of Two Rivers, bolstered by Maksim and Perrin, held their ground initially. They knew Alanna’s aid would be crucial in the fight to come.

Perrin instructs Maksim to launch an arrow high into the sky as a signal for Alanna to join them. Yet, before he could act, Alanna united with three other channelers – Mat’s sisters and the elder woman she had previously encountered – to create a tumultuous skyward vortex. With their combined powers, they hurled massive icicles at the enemy, gaining the upper hand in the battle.

However, Faile was taken aback as the foe retreated. But the battle wasn’t over yet; Alanna was ambushed from behind during their return to the village, and combat resumed anew.

In another location, Loial, Bain, and Chiad engage and eliminate Trollocs and other guards protecting the portal. Loial later steps through the portal to seal it from the opposite side. Simultaneously, a fight ensues in Two Rivers as residents struggle to keep the invaders at bay. A horn is heard, causing suspicion of more attackers, but instead, the White Cloaks arrive to aid them. Yet, upon seeing Padan, Perrin recognizes the danger they’re in and warns the White Cloak leader that he’s a Darkfriend. Padan reveals his true self by attacking both Two Rivers residents and the White Cloaks. The White Cloak leader admits ignorance about Padan, to which Perrin responds that he should have been aware. During this skirmish, Perrin fears he may be responsible for the deaths of many Two Rivers folk. However, Faile encourages him to fight for his people and prove his ability to save them. In response, Perrin ruthlessly eliminates anything or anyone in his path, while Faile takes care of those approaching from behind. Meanwhile, Loial attempts to shatter the portal but is unable due to the enchantments.

At the climax of the episode, Eamon Valda discovers Alanna in distress and intends to slay her, urging the two young channelers to move aside. However, these young channelers intervene and fatally burn Valda instead. In a critical fight, Perrin manages to capture Padan, preparing to end his life. Yet, an unseen force halts him, allowing Padan to retreat and order his troops. As for Loial, he persists in breaking the waygate; when all else fails, he shatters the floor beneath himself, effectively halting the Trolloc army at great personal cost. The people of Two Rivers emerge victorious, with Perrin joining the White Cloaks on a quest for justice. Many hail him as Lord Goldeneyes in their praise.

Again, “The Wheel of Time” demonstrates the power of compelling storytelling. The penultimate episode stands out as one of the finest this season, and arguably among the finest of all episodes. It’s raw, heart-wrenching, and exceptional in every conceivable way.

All seven episodes of The Wheel of Time Season 3 are streaming exclusively on Prime Video.
