Today, we finally received gameplay unveiling for Bungie’s Marathon, and they also announced the game’s launch date. This places it squarely in competition with another prominent first-person shooter series.
During their Marathon broadcast today, Bungie unveiled details about their next project – their debut game following Destiny 2. They announced that this new title is set to launch on September 23 for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and personal computers.
Marathon Finally Gets Dated And Its First Gameplay Features A Big Departure From Destiny
Additionally, Bungie has revealed that the initial closed alpha test for the game is scheduled to begin towards the end of this month, specifically on April 23rd. Interested players can register through the Marathon Discord server, but please note that participation isn’t guaranteed.
Remarkably, Sony has scheduled the game’s launch for September 23, coincidentally on the same day as Borderlands 4! However, it’s important to note that while Borderlands 4 is another first-person shooter within the series, it doesn’t fall under the category of extraction shooters. It’s unlikely that Gearbox will alter the core gameplay in this way.
In essence, Borderlands emphasizes treasure hunting with an array of weapons, incorporating crude humor and a robust campaign that allows for cooperative gameplay with friends. Conversely, Marathon is a multiplayer, sci-fi loot-based game set in the realm of PvP encounters. Notably, it will place greater emphasis on its live service aspects, as indicated by Bungie’s live stream, which highlights “seasonal narrative updates.
As a dedicated fan, I can’t predict if Marathon will make as big an impact as Destiny 2 did for me. Launched in 2017, Destiny 2 has undeniably left a lasting impression on the live-service looter shooter genre. It’s still going strong today, proving its enduring appeal and influence.
If you’re worried that Marathon might just be a repackaging of Destiny, fear not. This game appears to be something entirely unique, especially considering it’s the team’s initial original production since 2017.
Will Marathon surpass the popularity of Borderlands 4? That’s a question worth contemplating given the dedicated fanbase eager for the next installment in the Borderlands series. After the disappointing reception Concord received from Sony, there’s a lot riding on Marathon. It remains to be seen if it can recapture the enchantment of Bungie’s past successes or if it will join the ranks of other live-service games that didn’t meet expectations for Sony.
The game “Marathon” is set for release on September 23, available on PS5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC. Notably, gamers without a PlayStation platform can enjoy
