The fact isn’t hidden that the Harry Potter series is a significant player in the fantasy genre. Not only have fans immersed themselves in the books and movies for countless hours, but more recently, gamers have been delighted with both Hogwarts Legacy and Harry Potter: Quidditch Champions. Furthermore, there’s an abundance of merchandise, expansive theme parks, and a wealth of Harry Potter material for enthusiasts to delve into. However, the future of the Wizarding World, particularly in terms of video games, seems somewhat unclear.
Following the underwhelming response to the “Fantastic Beasts” series, Warner Bros. swiftly began planning a TV adaptation of the entire “Harry Potter” universe. Whether this new TV show will thrive or not is yet uncertain, but if it does, it could pose challenges for future “Harry Potter” video games. With numerous potential interpretations on the table, it might be hard to determine the best approach, and if the games make the wrong choice, they may struggle to replicate the success of “Hogwarts Legacy.
Harry Potter Games Face an Uncertain Future
There Are Countless Directions Harry Potter Games Could Take
Due to the triumph of Hogwarts Legacy, Warner Bros. is pushing ahead with a variety of new ventures set in the Wizarding World. In addition to the eagerly awaited sequel, there’s a demand for a fresh LEGO game, and Warner Bros. has declared that Harry Potter is one of their key franchises they plan to prioritize moving forward. Although this could result in some thrilling journeys, it remains unclear what kinds of games will stem from this strategy.
Currently, numerous perspectives on the Harry Potter series exist, and a game could draw from any of these interpretations. For instance, it might initially mimic the original movie saga that catapulted the series to fame. Another approach could mirror Hogwarts Legacy, focusing on a specific phase or aspect of the Wizarding World. If a developer prefers to carve out its own niche, it could present an unique take on the books. Lastly, a future game might align with the TV show continuity or center around characters from Fantastic Beasts.
Not Every Line of Harry Potter Media is Created Equal
As a die-hard fan, I can’t help but ponder about Warner Bros.’ potential move to launch a game based on the upcoming reboot of our beloved series. While such a game could undeniably fuel excitement among fans like myself, it might not resonate with those who grew up watching the films and are attached to the original storyline. Moreover, a game set within this new continuity may not appeal to those seeking an innovative take, such as what’s offered by Hogwarts Legacy. If the developers try to cater to every audience segment, they run the risk of creating a mediocre product that lacks a clear identity.
Each distinct approach suggests a challenge for upcoming video games when it comes to deciding on a specific path. Unlike franchises such as Star Wars, which strive to keep all their games within the primary storyline, anything outside this is labeled as Legends. Post-Disney’s acquisition of Lucasfilm, all mainline games have been positioned within the central narrative, albeit offering various genres and experiences while adhering to a common set of rules or aesthetic. On the other hand, the guidelines and visual style for Harry Potter’s future games are yet to be clearly defined.
It’s also plausible that the upcoming game Harry Potter, similar to Marvel and DC games, could stand alone with unique interpretations of characters. While some have led to their own series, many are independent. The distinct nature of games like Hogwarts Legacy and Harry Potter: Quidditch Champions suggests this might be the case. However, considering the rich history of video game adaptations in the Harry Potter franchise, it’s also feasible that they could bring live-action projects to life. We’ll have to wait and see.
