Solana’s network is currently facing congestion, resulting in many transactions failing. The team at Solana asks for community patience as they put in long hours to fix the root causes and improve the network’s foundation.
Root cause of Solana congestion
Based on Austin Federa’s report as a strategist at the Solana Foundation, teams from Anza, Firedancer, Jito, and other essential contributors are putting in considerable work to enhance Solana’s networking infrastructure in response to the present network congestion.
Federa explains that despite various theories about the origins of the traffic jam, he believes the fundamental issue stems from the QUIC protocol’s limitations during its application on the Agave validator client for Solana. Although efforts were made to address the congestion, the sudden escalation in demand for Solana exceeded predictions, intensifying the insufficiencies of the current setup.
Core developers at Anza, Firedancer, Jito, and other key contributors are putting in long hours (and sacrificing some sleep) to strengthen Solana’s networking infrastructure in response to the unmatched network traffic it’s currently experiencing. There have been numerous discussions about the specific reasons behind this surge in demand.

Federa refers to this as a “success impediment,” meaning that the complex task of managing new projects alongside existing upkeep has resulted in slower integration progress. Anatoly Yakovenko, co-founder of Solana, recently clarified that addressing congestion issues is a distinct challenge because of the unique procedures required for releasing a single update.
Developers working to resolve technical debt
Federa refers to the Solana network’s congestion issues as “technical debts,” implying that prioritizing new features over infrastructure enhancements may result in unexpected complications in the future. This situation recalls the experience Solana faced in early 2022, when the demand surpassed the capacity of several systems.
In spite of the existing challenges, Federa asserts that dedicated developers of Solana’s core protocol continue to work on enhancing and experimenting with network stack upgrades. He is hopeful that these advancements will ease network traffic issues promptly. Furthermore, he trusts in the cooperative spirit of developers and users united by a collective vision for Solana’s promising future.
Market experts and creators have criticized Solana for not taking action to prevent network congestion, despite warnings from some that it was coming. Andre Cronje, Fantom’s lead developer, characterizes this issue as Solana suffering from the consequences of its own prosperity.
