Giant Sparrow’s What Remains of Edith Finch, released in 2017, is still one of the most impactful games I’ve ever played, and we haven’t seen anything quite like it in the nine years since. This emotionally resonant, story-focused game tells the tale of the Finch family through diverse and creative gameplay. It’s a rare gem where story and gameplay work together seamlessly, and combined with its beautiful visuals and fantastic music, it’s stayed with me vividly since I first experienced it nine years ago.
I’m a big fan of Giant Sparrow’s games, especially What Remains of Edith Finch, which is one of my favorites. Their first game, The Unfinished Swan, is also fantastic. It lets you explore a blank, white world that you gradually fill with color. I loved both games, so I’m eagerly awaiting news on when their third game will be released.
What We Know About Giant Sparrow’s Next Game
Giant Sparrow is working on a third game, though they haven’t revealed the title or shown much of it yet. The developers have said it will draw inspiration from sources like the game ICO, the art style of Windosill, the film Spirited Away, early animation pioneer Winsor McCay, classic Disney films, and David Attenborough’s nature documentaries. The game will focus on the fascinating and sometimes unsettling aspects of biology, putting players in the shoes of a field biologist who studies both ordinary and extraordinary creatures living in cities. While there haven’t been many recent updates, Giant Sparrow’s website indicates they are making good progress.
Giant Sparrow is currently hiring a Senior Gameplay Designer and plans to add a Creature Programmer to the team around mid-2026. This suggests development on their third game is gaining momentum. However, details like a trailer release date, the game’s title, and a potential playtest timeframe remain unknown.
After the huge success and awards won by What Remains of Edith Finch, there’s a lot of anticipation for Giant Sparrow’s next game. Because it’s been a long time since their last release, expectations are especially high, but the studio has a proven track record of creating fantastic games.

I’m really excited to see what Giant Sparrow is working on next, and I’ll definitely be watching all the big gaming events for any news. June is packed with shows like Summer Game Fest, the Xbox showcase, and a Nintendo Direct, and there’s even talk of a PlayStation State of Play coming soon. Honestly, it might be a long shot that their new game will be revealed at any of those, but I’m staying hopeful and keeping my eyes peeled!
