The Hulk is one of Marvel’s most famous heroes, so it’s no surprise that over the years, several characters besides Bruce Banner have transformed into gamma-powered monsters. While General Ross, Jennifer Walters, and Amadeus Cho have all been Hulk for extended periods, others – like Deadpool, Wolverine, Spider-Man, Thor, and Captain America – have briefly held the title of “The Strongest There Is.” Daredevil recently became a Hulk, but so far, this is a one-time occurrence. Still, it’s a fun twist, and Marvel could potentially develop the idea further in future comics if fans enjoy it.
The 2010 Marvel storyline “World War Hulks” transformed many heroes into gamma-powered creatures. However, Daredevil wasn’t part of that event, making his recent green transformation a first in over 62 years of the character’s history.
Daredevil’s Transformation Marks a What If…? Milestone
In 2026, Marvel’s What If…? comic series will celebrate its 50th anniversary. To commemorate the milestone, artists are creating special variant covers exploring imaginative ‘what if’ scenarios. One of these covers introduces ‘Hulkdevil’ – a version of Daredevil born from the question of what would happen if the accident that blinded Matt Murdock didn’t grant him enhanced senses, but instead gave him the powers of The Hulk. Since the accident involved radioactive materials in the original comics, it’s not a far stretch to imagine those materials being gamma radiation – the source of The Hulk’s power. This simple change leads to a surprisingly dramatic result.
Hulkdevil combines the iconic green skin of the Hulk with features resembling Venom, like a long, snake-like tongue, and adds curled green horns. He still shows hints of Daredevil’s look, including a red mask similar to his classic black suit, wrapped hands referencing Jack Murdock, and oversized red clubs. This Hulk-Daredevil mix is even shown scaling a skyscraper, indicating he retains some agility, though he’s likely not as stealthy as Daredevil usually is.

It’s disappointing that this cool Hulk/Daredevil design only appears as a variant cover for another comic, and there isn’t a full issue of What If…? dedicated to it. However, there’s still a chance Hulkdevil could become more than just a one-off concept. ScreenRant points out that the New Champions team started with variant covers before getting their own comics, so a similar path is possible for Daredevil Hulk. Plus, Daredevil has a long and successful history in comics, with many beloved stories and few disappointments. Because of this, fans are always eager for more Daredevil content, and they might demand a miniseries based on this unique version of the character.
Hulkdevil Isn’t the Only What If…? Content For Year 50
The Daredevil Hulk cover is one of many alternate versions celebrating the history of the What If…? series. So far, readers have been treated to glimpses of:
- A heroic Sinister Six that teams up with Peter Parker
- Captain Marvel as a Skrull
- Iron Man if Extremis were a Symbiote
- Punisher if he had Magik’s armor
- Sorceror Supreme Rogue
- Colossus Wolverine
- The X-Men as heralds of Galactus
As a huge Marvel fan, I’m so excited about all the cool stuff coming up! Besides the awesome variant covers – like that giant Daredevil one – we’re finally getting some proper What If…? comics! In June, they’re going to show us what Cyclops’ life would have been like if he’d stayed with Madelyne Pryor, and it’s wild to think about Thor getting the Symbiote instead of Spider-Man. Then in July, they’re diving into an alternate version of the original Ultimate universe surviving Secret Wars, imagining Jessica Jones with spider-powers, and exploring what would’ve happened if Kraven lived. And August? Get ready for Captain America waking up in the year 2099, the Runaways not actually running away, and a seriously dark take where Cassandra Nova kills Professor X! It’s going to be a great few months!
The What If…? series isn’t without its flaws – the TV show has split fans, and some of the ideas in the comics are pretty strange, like making The Thing blue instead of orange. Still, it’s fantastic to see Marvel embracing the concept for those who enjoy exploring alternate possibilities. While a giant green Daredevil might seem odd at first, it actually fits with his backstory, and artist Netho Diaz did an amazing job bringing the idea to life. Whether this version of Daredevil appears again or not, it’s rare to see such a creative take on a character who’s been around for over 60 years, and that willingness to experiment is definitely worth celebrating.
