After 12 Years, Naruto Reveals The Second Hokage’s Official Successor

Tobirama Senju, the Second Hokage, first appeared in chapter 118 of the manga Naruto, published on April 22, 2002. He was a legendary figure in both Konoha and the wider ninja world, known for being a practical and powerful leader who greatly advanced the shinobi world. Tobirama was particularly famous as an inventor, creating many of the most important and powerful techniques (jutsu) in the Naruto universe.

It’s been 12 years since Naruto last appeared in chapter 691 (released September 22, 2014), and now his sequel series, Boruto, has revealed the next generation of a powerful ninja. The successor to Tobirama, known for creating many strong techniques, is actually Boruto Uzumaki himself.

Boruto Uzumaki Is Set Up As The Official Successor Of Tobirama Senju As The Inventor

Tobirama Senju was incredibly skilled in all five basic nature types, though he naturally excelled at Water Release. However, his most powerful abilities weren’t based on those elements at all. Tobirama’s true strength lay in his inventive genius – he created some of the most impressive and unique techniques in the Naruto world. A prime example is the Flying Raijin Technique, which allows for instant teleportation, making him the fastest ninja of his era. While Minato Namikaze later mastered and refined the technique, as confirmed in chapter 641 of the Naruto manga, Tobirama was the original creator.

Tobirama Senju, the Second Hokage, was a remarkably inventive ninja. He created the famous Shadow Clone Technique, as well as the incredibly powerful and dangerous Impure World Reincarnation (also known as Edo Tensei). He also developed Mutually Multiplying Paper Bombs, and these are just a few examples of his many contributions to the ninja world during his lifetime.

The series Boruto establishes Boruto Uzumaki as the natural successor to Tobirama. Though only 16 years old, Boruto has already created several powerful techniques, most notably a completely new version of Tobirama’s Flying Thunder God technique. This was officially revealed in chapter 16 of Boruto: Two Blue Vortex, published in V-Jump on November 20, 2024.

Boruto Has Invented 5 Jutsu In The Series So Far

In the Boruto: Two Blue Vortex series, Boruto Uzumaki has created five unique techniques and demonstrated proficiency in numerous other powerful jutsu. His first invention was the Vanishing Rasengan. While he didn’t intentionally create it at first, it’s still a technique he developed. By infusing the Rasengan with Lightning Release, Boruto altered its properties, making it disappear unexpectedly and catch opponents off guard.

This technique first appeared in chapter #2 of Boruto: Naruto Next Generations, published in Shueisha’s Weekly Shonen Jump issue #27 on June 20, 2016. After demonstrating this ability, Boruto Uzumaki created the Compression Rasengan, a new version with much greater piercing power and destructive force. He later developed a Super Compression Rasengan, which further enhanced the technique, allowing him to easily overcome even strong defenses, like those of a Kara Inner.

Chapter 4 of Boruto: Two Blue Vortex, released on November 4, 2023, revealed that Boruto Uzumaki can use the Flying Thunder God technique – originally created by Tobirama. Interestingly, Boruto developed this ability on his own, though his version isn’t as polished as Tobirama’s or Minato’s. What makes his technique special is his ability to infuse metals with chakra, allowing him to instantly teleport to them simply by visualizing their shape and sensing their chakra. This gives him a surprising advantage in battle, which we’ve already seen play out in the story. This new skill feels like a major step forward for Boruto’s character, especially considering his gradual development over the series.

Why Boruto Uzumaki’s Growth As The Next Inventor Will Make Him The Strongest Ninja

After following Boruto’s adventures in Two Blue Vortex for three years, it’s clear his training as a ninja is far from over. Boruto Uzumaki is still developing his skills and, with his natural talent, will likely create many more powerful techniques. He’s already invented around five jutsu himself and learned a lot from Sasuke and Kashin Koji, but the most impressive things are still to come. I’m really excited, along with many other fans, to see what Mikio Ikimoto and Masashi Kishimoto have planned for Boruto’s future transformations, abilities, and jutsu.

Currently, Boruto is proving to be a worthy successor to Tobirama Senju, and he’s already become more powerful. He has the potential to become stronger than all the Hokage who came before him. However, Boruto doesn’t want to be Hokage; he aspires to be a shinobi like Sasuke Uchiha, which is a commendable and interesting path for him.
