After 19 Years, Naruto Confirms The Death Of An Immortal Akatsuki Villain

Masashi Kishimoto, the author of the Naruto series, has created many fascinating villains, each with unique powers. A recurring ability Kishimoto gave to several villains was some form of immortality. Within the Akatsuki organization, both Hidan and Kakuzu possessed this power, but Hidan’s was true immortality, gained through his devotion to the god Jashin.

Hidan appeared to be defeated and buried at the end of his battle with Shikamaru in Naruto chapter 338, which was originally published on February 5, 2007. However, many fans thought he might still be alive. The current Boruto: Two Blue Vortex storyline, with its latest chapter released on May 20, 2026, now definitively confirms that Hidan is deceased, as stated by the author in the official data book, Kai no Sho, released on December 9, 2009.

Naruto Guidebook Kai no Sho Confirms Hidan Is No Longer Alive After The Shikamaru Fight

Hidan is a fascinating and frightening villain from Naruto. While not overwhelmingly powerful, he was strong enough to defeat Asuma and even hold his own against the Two-Tails beast. Ultimately, Shikamaru outsmarted him with a clever strategy, cutting Hidan into pieces and burying him in the Nara Forest. Because of his immortality, Hidan didn’t truly die, and his head remained conscious, leading many fans to believe he’s still out there somewhere.

Hidan said these words right before killing Asuma: “Everything is ready. Let the true suffering begin.”

As a huge Naruto fan, I was reading the new ‘Kai no Sho’ fan book, and it finally confirms something a lot of us have wondered: Kakashi is, sadly, no longer with us in the Boruto timeline! It’s interesting because the series has shown us immortality isn’t a simple thing – Hidan was ‘immortal’ but still vulnerable. Apparently, Kakashi didn’t meet a dramatic end in battle; the book reveals he eventually passed away from natural causes, basically just…rotting. It’s a surprisingly peaceful, if a little sad, end for such a legendary shinobi!

Hidan Couldn’t Survive Without Nutrition Underground

Hidan’s unique immortality means he doesn’t age and can’t be killed by normal attacks. Even if he’s cut into pieces, each part can still move, making him a terrifying enemy. However, Hidan isn’t completely unbeatable; he can be defeated by depriving him of food.

He was alive then, but like any living creature, he needed nourishment to stay healthy; otherwise, he would deteriorate. — Kai no Sho, December 9, 2009

Hidan, after being defeated by Shikamaru and buried in the Nara Forest, ultimately died from starvation and decay. Recent resurfacing of information from the Kai no Sho, originally documented in 2009, confirms this fate. This adds a compelling new layer to the story and highlights Shikamaru’s growth as a character, demonstrating his success in avenging Asuma’s death. It proves that Shikamaru can overcome even seemingly impossible obstacles, including an immortal opponent. This is why fans appreciate him and see him as a fitting candidate for the role of the 8th Hokage in the Boruto series.

Shikamaru declared, after burying Hidan, ‘I believe in the power of determination. But right now, your god isn’t some deity you worship—it’s me. I’m the one who will decide your fate.’ (Naruto Chapter 338)

Why True Immortality Could Only Be Achieved Through The Rinnegan

Hidan achieved immortality by making a deal with a god named Lord Jashin, dedicating worship and sacrifices to him. The exact nature of this immortality and Jashin’s identity remain mysterious. While Jashin granted Hidan the ability to avoid death, Hidan eventually died from decay and starvation. It’s worth noting that ‘immortality’ means different things in the Naruto universe; even Kakuzu’s ability to have multiple lives is considered a form of it, though it isn’t true immortality. The most complete form of immortality appears to be linked to the power of the Rinnegan.

I began with the Sharingan, and now I’ve awakened the Rinnegan. With these powers, I have access to abilities like reincarnation and even a form of immortality – I have countless possibilities at my disposal. — Sasuke Uchiha, Naruto Chapter #694

The Rinnegan is an incredibly powerful eye technique that essentially gives its user control over life and death, as demonstrated in the Pain Arc and subsequent storylines. It can grant a form of immortality that surpasses anything offered by Jashin. Unlike Hidan, a Rinnegan user doesn’t suffer from physical decay because they can naturally absorb chakra from anyone they touch. We see this ability in action during Naruto’s battle with Nagato (chapter 551 of Weekly Shonen Jump, released September 5, 2011), where he drains chakra directly from others.

The Rinnegan overcomes the weaknesses of Jashin’s immortality. Sasuke has also confirmed it can aid in reincarnation, and even steal life force, granting the user god-like power. If someone were truly immortal in the world of Naruto, they would likely be a skilled Rinnegan user. Interestingly, the strongest character in Naruto, Shibai Otsutsuki, possessed a Rinnegan. He became so powerful that he transcended his physical form and achieved true immortality, existing on a higher plane of existence.
