After 20 Years, World of Warcraft is Getting Player Housing

I’ve been a dedicated MMORPG enthusiast since the early 2000s, and while I wasn’t one of the original World of Warcraft (WoW) players back in 2004, I did eventually join the ranks in 2010. Over the years, I’ve always felt that WoW was missing a key feature that most other games in the genre offered – player housing. But it seems like my prayers have been answered! The teaser for the next major expansion, Midnight, revealed that player housing is finally coming to WoW after two decades!

Since 2004, I’ve been engrossed in the world of Massively Multiplayer Online Role-Playing Games (MMORPG), not starting with World of Warcraft at its launch but rather with EverQuest 2. After a few years, I moved on to Blizzard’s massive MMO around the time of Cataclysm’s release. However, it lacked an immersive feature that many games in this genre offered. Now, after two decades, World of Warcraft will finally introduce player housing!

In a sneak peek on X (previously known as Twitter), Blizzard revealed player housing for World of Warcraft, set to arrive in the upcoming expansion, Midnight. The brief teaser video suggests that players will be able to adorn their walls and floors with an assortment of items, such as trinkets and furniture. A snapshot shows a warrior enjoying a drink from a mug, then settling by the fire. The trailer ends with a glimpse of two floor rugs, one displaying the Horde emblem and the other showcasing the Alliance symbol.

Speaking with PC Gamer, Blizzard’s Ion Hazzikostas said:

We want to give players a little sneak preview of some of what the team is cooking. This also gives us a chance, I think, to have more open conversations about it that aren’t possible when it’s a top secret feature.

[Player housing] an idea that’s been kicked around for a long time—but we knew that to do it, we needed to be able to do it right. It’s a tremendously large undertaking.

Moreover, Hazzikostas indicated that the team is eager to get feedback from the community about their preferences and expectations for player housing. If you have ideas or opinions, don’t hesitate to share them. Blizzard frequently engages with the community on social media, and they provide platforms like forums where you can submit your suggestions for the upcoming expansion’s player homes feature!

Just this past summer, the team behind World of Warcraft finally established a union. Here’s hoping they can now provide improved work environments and more exciting content as a result!
