All Abilities in Saros

As you play through the story of Saros, you’ll learn more about the character Arjun and the world of Carcosa. While exploring the various environments, you’ll find obstacles like yellow barriers, grapple points, and jump pads. You won’t be able to reach everything at first, but these areas will open up as you advance in the game. These new abilities aren’t just for getting around—they have other uses too, which are explained in more detail in the Saros guide below.

All Abilities in Saros

Jump Network

  • Biome: Ancient Depths

You’ll first unlock the Jump Network pads, which are scattered throughout the game and become available early on. After you defeat the first boss, Prophet, and reach the Ancient Depths, you’ll need to return to the Passage. Then, using the World Dial on your Primary, you can quickly teleport back to the Ancient Depths, continue exploring, and get the new ability.

Okay, so I finally unlocked that ability, and it’s a game-changer! Now all those jump pads actually work throughout the whole game. Seriously, I can just hit the jump button on them and get way more air than before. It’s letting me reach areas I couldn’t even dream of getting to before, and it turns out those pads are even part of a boss fight, which is pretty cool!

Grapple

  • Biome: Shattered Descent

You’ll begin finding clues for this ability in the first two areas of the game, but you won’t be able to use it until you reach the third. Once you first enter Shattered Descent, you’ll need to find an item and return it to the Passage. After watching the cutscene, go back to Shattered Descent and activate the terminal. This will unlock the Grapple ability.

The grapple ability lets you quickly travel across large spaces by pressing Triangle. You can also use it to reach hidden areas and optional paths with grapple points. Keep an eye out for grapple points in tough rooms and during boss fights – they’re great for dodging enemy attacks and projectiles when things get hectic.

Overdrive

  • Biome: Blighted Marsh

Overdrive is a combat ability that becomes available in the Blighted Marsh biome. It doesn’t help you open new areas, but it does give you an edge in battles. As you damage enemies with your main weapons, you’ll charge up the Overdrive meter. When it’s full, a message will appear on screen, and you can activate it by pressing both L3 and R3 buttons simultaneously.

Overdrive is particularly effective against Overlords and Alpha hostiles because it significantly damages them. While it can also clear out rooms, it’s best used by grouping enemies together so you can hit several at once.

Okay, so there’s a Bronze trophy you get for taking down 30 enemies with the Overdrive ability. If you’re going for the Platinum, you need to be using Overdrive to clear out rooms whenever you can. It’s a really efficient way to get that trophy and keep the Platinum within reach!

Parry

  • Biome: Blighted Marsh

From the very beginning of the game, during the fight with Consort, you’ll encounter red projectiles called Novas. Unlike yellow projectiles, you can’t absorb these with the Soltari Shield or dash through them – you’ll need to dodge them. Once you reach the middle of biome 4 and restore power, you’ll meet an NPC who will teach you how to parry.

Okay, so I finally unlocked the parry ability, and it’s a game-changer! Now, whenever I see those Nova projectiles coming at me, I can just hit the melee button to deflect them. And get this – after unlocking it, a bunch more enemies started shooting red projectiles too! It’s awesome because I can parry those back at them and totally stun them. It’s made combat so much more fun and strategic!

Eclipse Threads

  • Biome: Desecrated Fortress

Eclipse Threads is a special ability that’s a bit hidden – you won’t immediately see it like you do with abilities like Grapple or Jump Network. You might have found rooms with items just out of reach, and wondered how to get to them. Look closely for a faint, curved white line. That’s Eclipse Threads, and you’ll unlock it when you reach the Desecrated Fortress in the fifth biome.

Once unlocked, use the L1 button near the thread to quickly travel longer distances. This speeds up movement between areas, though it won’t be available in every room. It also opens up access to previously unreachable areas and collectibles.

Keep in mind that this feature only works when the Eclipse is turned on. If the Eclipse isn’t active, you’ll still see a faint white line.

Blazing Strike

  • Biome: Yellow Shore

Many players consider Blazing Strike the most useful ability in the game. This is because yellow barriers appear early on, similar to how they worked in Returnal. However, unlike in Returnal – where you needed to find and create an item to upgrade your melee attacks and break those barriers – Returnal’s system is different. In this game, Blazing Strike is unlocked as you progress through the story, and once unlocked, it permanently allows you to break yellow barriers in any area.

The main downside to this ability is that you don’t get it until the very end of the game, specifically in the Yellow Shore area. You’ll reach Yellow Shore after finishing Act 2 and completing the Passage. As soon as you arrive, you’ll see a yellow barrier – interacting with it unlocks the ability.

Once you unlock this ability, you’ll be able to destroy the yellow barriers you’ve already encountered. But that’s not all – it also lets you break open yellow-locked containers that usually need a Carcosan Key. Instead of finding a key, you can now simply attack these containers to get a powerful weapon.

Blazing Strike also works on enemies who are stunned. If you hit an enemy enough times, they’ll be staggered for a short period. During this time, pressing R1 will inflict a lot of damage, and often defeat regular enemies instantly.
